Ruud Rebounds to Down Koepfer

World No. 21 Casper Ruud fought back from a set down to defeat Germany’s Dominik Koepfer 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open on Thursday.

The Norwegian, who was broken twice in the first set, made a remarkable recovery, breaking the German thrice in the next two to win the contest in an hour and 58 minutes and advance to a fourth consecutive semifinal.

A three-time ATP finalist and the winner of the Buenos Aires title in 2020, Ruud came to Geneva having reached three successive semifinals in Monte-Carlo, Munich and Madrid, but failed to make the finals after being knocked out by Andrey Rublev, Nikoloz Basilashvili and Matteo Berrettini respectively.

The first player from Norway to win an ATP title and reach multiple ATP finals, Ruud also had his best Grand Slam showing earlier this year, reaching the Round of 16 of the Australian Open. The 22-year-old also reached the last eight in Acapulco and Marbella.

Seeded third in the tournament, Ruud, who received a first-round bye, had beaten Tennys Sandgren 7-5, 6-2 in the Round of 16. Thursday’s win improved him to 18-6 in 2021.

Andujar Ends Stricker’s Run

Two days after scoring a stunning win against Roger Federer, World No. 75 Pablo Andujar got a third successive win in the tournament to secure a place in the semifinals.

The 35-year-old Spaniard rallied from a set down to defeat 18-year-old Swiss Dominic Stephen Stricker, who had stunned Marin Cilic and Marton Fucsovic in the first two rounds. Andujar won the two-hour-and-13-minute contest 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The Spaniard, who has won four ATP titles, will be aiming to reach a 10th ATP final on Friday. All of his previous nine finals have been on clay.

The former World No. 32, who began the tournament with a 6-0, 6-4 win over Australia’s Jordan Thompson, knocked out Federer 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 in the Round of 16 on Tuesday for his fifth career top 10 win, and a first since 2015.

This has been Andujar’s best performance so far in 2021. The Spaniard, who had reached the quarterfinals in Buenos Aires this year, improved to 7-9 after the quarterfinal win on Thursday.

Andujar withstood 10 aces from Stricker and won just 48% of points in the match. However, he saved 7 of 11 break points and converted 5 of 8 to reach his first semifinal of the year.
