Sloane Stephens v Wang Qiang Head to Head

The pair have met twice before, both times on hard courts, Wang winning on each occasion. The Chinese woman won in the first round of the Australian Open in 2016, and again at the same stage in Wuhan the following year.

Another Easy Win for Stephens

Stephens is desperately searching for the form that made her the winner of the US Open in 2017, and took her to the final in Paris a year later.

In those days she was ranked as high as three in the world, but her current standings reflect how her performances and standards have dipped since then.

However, having made the quarter-finals in Charleston and now reaching the semi-finals here, she will be hooping that she has finally begun to turn a corner.

She began her week with a straight sets win over compatriot. Cathy McNally, although the world 109 did take her to a first set tie-break, and lost the second set by the odd break of serve.

Then she had an impressive win over the Russian Daria Kasatkina, the world 37, seeded four in Parma, recovering from the loss of the first set for the gain of just one game, to win in three sets,

And then with some of her old confidence returning, she disposed of the challenge of local woman Sara Errani on Thursday.

Errani began badly, dropping her opening service game and, although she was briefly level, she dropped it again, and then for a third time, enabling Stephens to take the set, after converting her third break point.

The Italian’s game then began to fell apart and she failed to win a single game after that. She had her chances against the American’s serve, but failed to take any, and was well-beaten in the end.

Qiang’s Continues Her Fine Run in Parma

Wang did not come into Parma in the best of form, having previously only one just one match on clay in 2021.

But, helped by a kind draw, that saw her draw first against the world 82, Misaka Doi of Japan, and then the Italian qualifier Martina Di Giuseppe, she made her way through to the quarter-finals.

There was nothing fortuitous though about her victory over Petra Martic of Croatia on Thursday evening, the world 23, and second seed, who had reached the semi-finals in Roe last week.

The first set went with serve – both players had chances to break, could not take them, and it went eventually to a tie-break which Wang eventually took on her fourth set point.

Wang looked like she had seized control when she broke Martic early in the second set, but the Croat broke back straight away to level, and then broke twice more to force a decider.

Both players became increasingly nervous and the mistakes began to mount up, with the result being a sequence of five games against the serve, at the end of which Wang was leading. She then broke Martic again,  and although the Croat grabbed one of the breaks back she was powerless to prevent Wang serving out for the match.

Sloane Stephens v Qaing Wang Prediction and Tip

Neither woman would have been picked out as a potential semi-finalist at the start of the week, and for the pair of them, this is a welcome return to form. Wang though is the higher ranked player, and has won both her previous two matches against Stephens and will start favourite to make it three.
