First 2021 Final for Ruud

It has been a strong clay season for Casper Ruud where the 22-year-old reached a career high ranking of world number 16.  While 2020 was a strong year for the Norwegian where he won his first ATP title at the Argentina Open and made the top 25 in the world, this season has been one better on that.

Ruud started the clay swing with a quarter-final showing at the Andalucia Open but upped it a notch at the Monte Carlo Masters, where he was a semi-finalist defeating the likes of Diego Schwartzman, Fabio Fognini and Pablo Carreno Busta.

Another strong showing at the Madrid Masters with victories over Felix Auger-Aliassime, Stefanos Tsitsipas and Alexander Bublik made for another semi-final before a close loss to Matteo Berrettini.

Ruud skipped the Italian Open after the fatigue of the last few weeks, but was back in Geneva as the number two seed this week and one of the favorites even with Roger Federer in the draw, such has been his dominance on the clay.

The Norwegian was off to a good start this week against Tennys Sandgren and although he was pushed by Dominik Koepfer in the quarters, he came back well and is now in his first final overcoming any and all semi-final hurdles.

Best Run In a Clay Tourney For Shapovalov

World No. 15 Denis Shapovalov eased past Serbia’s Laslo Djere in the quarterfinals of the Geneva Open on Thursday to reach the final four of a tournament for the second time in 2021. He had a 1-10 record in the semi-finals and with an opponent like Pablo Cuevas on clay, the test could be stern in the semis again

The upside was that the Canadian, who won his only ATP title in Stockholm in 2019 and finished runner-up at the Paris Masters the same year, has found his footing on clay ahead of the French Open. He had a disappointing start to the clay season, making early exits from Barcelona, Estoril and Madrid; but a run to the round of 16 in Rome, where he squandered two match points before going down to Rafael Nadal in a thriller, but the quarterfinal win on Thursday will give him a lot of confidence ahead of the Roland Garros event.

This was evident in the semi-finals against Cuevas as he played a strong game from the baseline and prevailed 6-4,7-5 to make his third ATP tour final and his first ever on clay.

Ruud v Shapovalov Prediction and Tip

Both players are in good touch and have oodles of talent and this should be an exciting final. Ruud starts as a strong favorite given the surface and the great form he has been in on clay. But, the Canadian will not go out without a fight. Expect Ruud to clinch his first title of the year in a three-setter.
