Albot Will Look to Recapture Early Season Form

Radu Albot will be making his first main draw appearance on clay this year. The Moldovan, who is 5-5 this year, featured in the Madrid Open qualifiers, but lost to Lorenzo Musetti in the first qualifying round.

The winner of 2019 Delray Beach Open, Albot had a decent first quarter, matching his best Grand Slam performance at the Australian Open and then reaching the semifinals in Singapore.

Beginning the 2021 season with two defeats on the trot, the 31-year-old Moldovan found form at the Australian Open, defeating 12th seed Roberto Bautista Agut in the first round, and Australia’s Christopher O’Connell in the second to reach the third round of a Grand Slam for a third time in his career.

However, Norway’s Casper Ruud denied him a maiden Round of 16 spot by handing him a four-set defeat .

Albot, who reached a career-high ranking of 39 in 2019, followed his Australian Open performance with a run to the semifinals at the Singapore Open.

Beginning the tournament with a win over Australian John-Patrick Smith, Albot saved match points against German Yannick Hanfmann to reach the quarterfinals, where he knocked out the top seed Adrian Mannarino in straight sets.

He looked in good position to reach a second career final after taking the first set against Alexander Bublik in the semifinals, but the Kazakh bounced back to stop the resurgent Moldovan’s run in Singapore.

In his next tournament in Dubai, Albot entered the main draw as a lucky loser but was beaten by Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the first round.

Albot, who had a 0-11 start in all competitions in 2020, had finished the year strongly with a 7-12 record, which included last eight finishes in Cologne and Sofia.

Monteiro Struggling on European Clay in 2021

Facing Albot in the first round will be Brazil’s Thiago Monteiro who comes to the tournament with a 9-8 record in 2021.

The 26-year-old left-hander had a stunning start to the year, when he reached the semifinals of the Great Ocean Road Open by winning four successive matches, but was denied a place in a maiden ATP final by Italy’s Stefano Travaglia, who won in straight sets.

Monteiro also won his first match at the Australian Open, defeating Andrej Martin, but fell to Andrey Rublev in the next round.

The Brazilian, who prefers playing on clay, next reached the quarterfinals at the Cordoba Open and the second round at the Argentina Open, but lost that early season form on the European clay season. Having failed to go past the qualifiers in Monte-Carlo, Monteiro lost to Jaume Munar in the first round in Barcelona and then to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the first round in Munich.

The Brazilian then failed to make the main draws in Madrid and Rome and was knocked out of the first round in Geneva by Laslo Djere earlier this week.

Radu Albot v Thiago Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Both players are looking to regain the early season form. While Albot hasn’t played much on the European clay season, Monteiro is 1-6, with the sole win coming in the first qualifier in Rome. So both will be desperate to win and that calls for a good match.

However, Monteiro will have a slight advantage having played seven matches on clay in Europe.
