Gracheva Looking to Keep Momentum Going

Russia’s Varvara Gracheva comes to Strasbourg with an 8-11 overall record (including qualifiers) in 2021. The 20-year-old will come in with a lot of confidence having reached the semifinals at the WTA 125 in Saint Malo earlier this month.

Gracheva defeated Denmark’s Clara Tauson in the first round, Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova in the Round of 16 and Sweden’s Rebecca Peterson in the quarterfinals before being defeated by Italy’s Jasmine Paolini in the semifinals.

The Russian right-hander, who reached the third round of the U.S. Open last year by defeating Paula Badosa and Kristina Mldenovic in the first two rounds before falling to Petra Martic, reached the second round of the Australian Open on her main draw debut in Melbourne earlier this year.

Gracheva also reached the second rounds at the Yarra Valley Classic and the Phillip Island Trophy but was knocked out of the first rounds in Lyon, Guadalajara, Monterrey and Charleston.

The Russian player has reached nine finals and won seven titles at the ITF level and all of those have been on clay.

Burel Has Shown Good Form at ITF Level

Facing Gracheva in the first round will be World No. 144 Clara Burel of France, who comes into the tournament having won an ITF title on clay in Saint Gaudens last week.

Burel also reached an ITF final in Oeiras, Portugal last month but had to withdraw before the final against Polona Hercog.

The 20-year-old Frenchwoman had reached the third round of the French Open on her main draw debut last year. The right-hander defeated Arantxa Rus and Kaja Juvan in the first two rounds before falling to Shuai Zhang in the Round of 32.

Burel won all her qualifying rounds at the Australian Open this year, but lost in the Round of 128, falling to Alison Van Uytvanck.

In what was her best performance at the WTA tour this year, she reached the quarterfinals in Lyon by beating fifth seed Alize Cornet and Aliaksandra Sasnovich in the first two rounds, but went down fighting to second seed Fiona Ferro. All three of those matches in Lyon were three set affairs.

Gracheva v Burel Prediction and Tip

This should be a good contest between two players who have delivered good results this month. However, Gracheva will be a slight favourite having reached the semifinals at the WTA 125 event.
