Vesely Looking to End Losing Streak

Czech Republic’s Jiri Vesely has not won a tennis match since February 23 and the World No. 71 comes to Parma on the back of five successive defeats across levels.

A two-time winner on the tour, Vesely is 5-6 on the tour this year, with his best performance coming at the Murray River Open, where he defeated Frederico Ferreira Silva, Casper Ruud and Ricardas Berankis to reach the quarterfinals. In the last eight, he lost the first set tiebreak to Felix Auger-Aliassime before retiring with an injury.

At the Australian Open, he won a dramatic five-setter against Kimmer Coppejans to reach the second round, but couldn’t progress further after being beaten by Pablo Carreno Busta in four.

Vesely next defeated Mikael Ymer in the first round in Montpellier, but since then he hasn’t won a single match. He lost the second round match at Montpellier to Peter Gojowczyk and then made first round exits in Miami and Cagliari after defeats to Laslo Djere and Andrej Martin respectively. He also lost in the first qualifying round in Monte Carlo and the first round of a Challenger in Heilbronn, Germany.

The Czech player’s two titles came in Auckland in 2015 and Pune in 2020. He has a 50 percent winning record on clay but is searching for a first win on the surface this season.

Johnson is 0-2 on Tour in 2021

Facing Vesely in the first round will be American Steve Johnson, who hasn’t played much this year and comes to Parma with a 0-2 record.

The 31-year-old right-hander lost in straight sets to Laslo Djere and Yannick Hanfmann in Acapulco and Miami respectively and also failed to win a set in his first Challenger event of the year in Orlando, going down to Christopher Eubanks in the first round. He finally won a set against Emilio Gomez at a Challenger in Oeiras, Portugal this week, but remained winless in 2021.

The World No. 83, who won two Challenger titles in 2020 and also reached the quarterfinals at Delray Beach last year, has reached six ATP finals in his career and won four of them. Two of those were won on grass in Nottingham 2016 and Newport 2018, while the other two were won on clay in Houston in 2017 and 2018.

Johnson finished runner-up in Vienna in 2015 and Winston-Salem in 2018.

The American, who reached a career-high ranking of 21 in 2016, has a 29-30 career record on clay.
