Linette Ends Five-Match Losing Streak

World No. 48 Magda Linette ended a five-match losing streak on Sunday as she powered past Japan’s Nao Hibino in the first round of the Strasbourg Open to register only her second win in 2021.

In what was a dominating performance, the 29-year-old Polish player needed just an hour to rout the Japanese 6-2, 6-0. Linette converted all six of the break point opportunities in the match and saved five of six break points to beat the World No. 82.

Linette, who began the 2021 season at the Miami Open, had beaten Robin Montgomery in the first round of the Premier Mandatory event, but a defeat in the second round to Johanna Konta started a losing streak for Linette, who went on to make four successive first-round exits.

The 29-year-old right-hander fell to Amanda Anisimova at the Volvo Car Open, Maria Camila Osorio Serrano at the MUSC Health Women’s Open, Saisai Zheng at the Madrid Open and Petra Kvitova at the Italian Open.

Linette, who has reached four finals at the WTA level, won the Bronx Open in 2019 and the Hua Hin Championships last year.

She had also won her first round match in Strasbourg last year, but was beaten by Elina Svitolina in the Round of 16.

Cornet Knocks Out Kristyna Pliskova

Facing Linette will be six-time WTA winner and seven-time runner-up, Alize Cornet, who knocked out Kristyna Pliskova in the first round on Sunday.

The world no. 65 saved 2 of 5 break points and broke her opponent five times in the match from nine breaking opportunities to win the one hour and 39 minutes contest 6-4, 7-5.

The former world no. 11 had won the title at Strasbourg by beating Lucie Hradecka in the final in 2013. She had finished runner-up to Francesca Schiavone in the same event in 2012. Last year, the 31-year-old had won her first round here against Polona Hercog but fell in the Round of 16 to Elena Rybakina.

Sunday’s win improved Cornet to 8-11 in the main draws this year. She is 3-4 in the main draws and 5-5 including qualifiers on clay.
