Struff Warming Up for French Open

Struff enjoyed a bye in the first round in Parma. Like all the top players he is using the tournament as a warm-up for the French Open, an event where he achieved his best ever result in a Grand Slam in 2019, reaching the fourth round before losing to Novak Djokovic.

That was perhaps surprising as clay does not suit his natural game, which relies on a strong serve, and a good volleying technique as well as the ability to hit winners on either wing.

He has enjoyed a string of solid performers during the European clay court season this year, notably on home soil in Munich, where he reached the final before losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in straight sets.

He also reached the third round in Sardinia, before losing to the same man.

Since Munich, Struff was beaten in the first round in Madrid and lost in the second round in Rome, defeated by Andrey Rublev.

Cobolli, a Teenage Italian Wildcard

As  a junior, Cobolli won the French Open doubles last year with his partner Dominic Stricker, the pair having finished runners-up in Paris the year before. He spends the vast majority of his time on the junior tours, finishing runner-up in a Challenger event in Rome last month.

However, given a wildcard in Parma on Sunday, he marked the occasion with his maiden ATP victory on the senior tour.

And the scalp he claimed was an impressive one, beating the American Marcos Giron, a man ranked 347 places higher than him in the world.

Giron began the stronger of the two, taking the first set with three service breaks to one.

The second set was close, both men dropping their serve once, resulting in a tie-break. Cobolli was the first to drop his serve but he soon hit back and was able to level the match and force the decider.

Fortunes fluctuated during the third set. Cobolli broke early but Groin levelled, Then Cobolli had three match points but the American saved then all.

It was then the turn of Giron to have two match points and this time, it was Cobolli who had to save them. Finally, it went to a tie-break and Cobolli did  just enough to get the job done.

Struff v Cobolli Prediction and Tip

Struff will start the overwhelming favourite against a man playing in what will be only his second ever match in an ATP main draw. Anything other than a straight sets win for the German would be a turn-up for the books.

Tip: Struff to win in straight sets: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
