Federico Delbonis v Thiago Monteiro Head to Head

This will be their first meeting on the tour.

At the Challenger and qualifying levels, Delbonis has dominated the head-to-head matchup, winning all three of their completed matches, in Biella, Italy and Campinas, Brazil in 2018 and in Barcelona in 2019. They were also supposed to meet in Lima in 2018, but Delbonis had retired from the contest without taking the court.

Delbonis Survives a Scare

World No. 52 Federico Delbonis of Argentina survived a scare against World No. 254 Lukas Klein of Slovakia in the first round of the Belgrade Open on Monday.

The Argentine bounced back after conceding the first set to win the two-hour-and-20-minute contest 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Klein, who was in the main draw as a lucky loser, had 19 break point opportunities in the match, but the Argentine saved 18 of them. Delbonis himself had six chances to break his opponent’s serve and he capitalised on two occasions.

Overall Delbonis won 109 of 211 points in the match to advance to the Round of 16.

It has been a solid year for the 30-year-old left-hander, who improved to 15-10 following Monday’s victory. All 15 of those wins have come on clay, and includes a run to the quarterfinals at the Rome Masters.

A two-time winner on the Tour, Delbonis also reached the semifinals in Santiago and the quarterfinals in Belgrade-1.

In Rome, Delbonis qualified for the main draw by beating Marcos Giron and Frances Tiafoe in the qualifiers and then continued his forward march defeating three top 30 players, Karen Khachanov, David Goffin and Felix Auger-Aliassime, to reach the last eight of a Masters for the first time. His stunning run, however, ended with a defeat to Reilly Opelka.

Delbonis also looked good at Madrid Masters, defeating higher-ranked players in Pablo Carreno Busta and Albert Ramos-Vinolas after qualifying for the main draw, but failed to go past Matteo Berrettini in the Round of 16.

Monteiro Routs Albot

On Wednesday, Delbonis will face World No. 79 Thiago Monteiro, who ousted Moldova’s Radu Albot in the first round to register his first main draw win on European clay this season.

The 26-year-old Brazilian needed just an hour and 14 minutes to dispatch the Moldovan 6-2, 6-2. Monteiro won 74% service points and 49% return points and saved all three of the break points that he faced, while converting four of eight to advance to the Round of 16.

This was the Brazilian left-hander’s eighth match on European clay in 2021, including qualifiers. He had won just one of his previous seven, winning the first qualifying round against Mikhail Kukushkin in Rome.

Monday’s win improved Monteiro to 10-8 this season, which includes a stunning run to the semifinals of the Great Ocean Road Open in February, where he won four successive matches to reach the final four, but was denied a place in a maiden ATP final by Italy’s Stefano Travaglia, who won in straight sets.

The Brazilian, who prefers playing on clay, also reached the quarterfinals of the Cordoba Open earlier this year, but lost his early season form on European clay. The win over Albot will give him a lot of confidence going into the next round.

Federico Delbonis v Thiago Monteiro Prediction and Tip

Although Delbonis was pushed by the unheralded Slovak on Monday, he will still be happy to have survived the first round contest. The Argentine has been in excellent form and should continue marching ahead in the tournament. Monteiro did score a convincing win over Albot, but the Moldovan has not played much on clay this season, so Monteiro’s faces real test on Wednesday.

Expect Delbonis to advance.
