Monfils Looking to Get in Form Ahead of French Open

World No. 15 Gael Monfils will be hoping to get into some sort of rhythm ahead of the French Open as he kicks off his campaign in the Round of 16 of the Belgrade Open on Wednesday. The 34-year-old Frenchman, who is seeded second in the tournament, has received a first round bye.

Plagued by injuries, Monfils hasn’t played much this season and comes to Belgrade with a 1-4 record in 2021.

The former World No. 6, who has featured in 31 ATP finals and won 10 titles, had claimed two title last year, winning ATP 500 in Rotterdam and ATP 250 in Montpellier.

This year, Monfils lost his round robin match to Matteo Berrettini at the ATP Cup and then was edged out by Emil Ruusuvuori in a dramatic five-set first-round contest at the Australian Open.

The Frenchman missed the entire hard court season following the Melbourne slam, before making a return to tennis at the Rome Masters. However, he remained winless in 2021, falling to Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 64.

A two-time Grand Slam semifinalist, Monfils got his first win of the year in Lyon last week, winning his first-round match against Thiago Seyboth Wild, but he failed to win two in a row, going down to Yoshihito Nishioka in a three.

Having practiced with Roger Federer over the weekend, Monfils will be confident of a better showing in Belgrade.

Carballes Baena Eases Past Rinderknech

Facing Monfils in the second round will be Spain’s Roberto Carballes Baena, who eased past Arthur Rinderknech in the first round on Monday.

Ranked 98th in the world, Carballes Baena needed just an hour and 20 minutes to beat the Frenchman 6-0, 6-4.

Broken just once in the second set, the Spaniard converted five of 11 break points in the match. He also won 70% of first serve points and 75% of second serve points in the match.

The 2018 Quito champion had qualified for the main draw by beating Bosnian player Mirza Basic in the first qualifying round and Czech Republic’s Vit Kopriva in the second qualifier.

Carballes Baena is 4-9 this year, with his best performance coming in Santiago, where he won two matches in a row against Salvatore Caruso and Juan Manuel Cerundolo before falling in the quarterfinals to Daniel Elahi Galan.

Monday’s win was his first main draw win on the European clay season this year.
