David Goffin v Lorenzo Musetti Head to Head

The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 30-year old Belgian, and the Italian teenager, who is 11 years younger..

Goffin in Mixed Form

Goffin achieved his career breakthrough at the French Open in 2012, qualifying as a lucky loser before going on to reach the fourth round, eventually losing to Roger Federer.

Four years later he reached the quarter-finals (equalling his best at a Grand Slam event) and again made the fourth round.

His recent form though has been mixed. He made the quarter-finals in Monte Carlo, but was then beaten by Dan Evans of Great Britain, a man not known for his prowess on a clay court.

Goffin then suffered successive second round defeats in Barcelona, where he retired from his match with another British player, Cameron Norrie, and in Rome, where he was beaten by the Argentine, Federico Delbonis.

In his last event in Lyon, Goffin was knocked out in the first round by the Slovenian, Aljaz Bedene.

Musetti Makes His Grand Slam Debut

Musetti is a former number one ranked junior, who won the Australian Open boys’ title in 2019, but this is his first appearance in the main draw of a  Grand Slam event.

He has already made history this year by becoming the youngest man ever to break into the world’s top 100, reaching the semi-final of the Mexican Open, recording his first win over a top ten player, beating Diego Schwartzman.

He then repeated the feat in Lyon, before his run was ended by Stefanos Tsitsipas, but he did have the satisfaction of taking the world number five to three sets.

Most recently Musetti was competing on home soil in Parma, where he beat compatriot Gianluca Mager in the first round before going down to a straight sets defeat to the Japanese player Yoshida Nishikori.

Goffin v Musetti Prediction and Tip

Musetti will have no fear coming into this match and will know that he has nothing to lose in his Grand Slam debut. Goffin will need to rely on all his experience to beat him. Things could get interesting given Musetti is starting off a bookmaker’s favourite here.
