Steve Johnson v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Their only previous meeting at the highest level came on the clay courts of the Houston Open in 2018 and Johnson had gone on to win that match in straight sets.

Tiafoe in Clay Court Struggle This Season

It’s not as if Tiafoe’s overall record or that on clay otherwise has shown too much of a sparkle. This season, he kick-started his clay swing with three wins and three defeats but from there on, has featured in three more clay tournaments and not won a single main draw match.

Worse still, Tiafoe was bundled out of the qualifiers at both, the Madrid and Rome Masters, and losing his opener at Estoril.

His overall record on clay is even worse. Till before the start of this year, he had won just 10 of his 29 matches on this surface and in six previous attempts at Roland-Garros never made round two.

And in order to break that jinx this time around, he has one of his best chances because despite his own poor form, that of his opponent is even worse.

Johnson Hasn’t Won a Match This Year

Johnson has gone through his off-court tribulations after the passing of his father in 2017 with the American going through phases of needing his time away at times. Earlier this year, he had also opted out of the Australian Open because of personal reasons and only to returned to the sport in March to play in Acapulco.

Sadly for Johnson, he has been unable to get going in 2021.

The four-time ATP winner has played five matches this season including two on the Challenger circuit and lost all five of them. Two of them came on clay including one last week in Parma.

In fact, Johnson has won just one set in these five matches, having last won a competitive tennis match in October 2020.

The American now takes on another from his country who is going through his own form issues but can Johnson retrieve some of his lost confidence to put up a fight?

Johnson v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Tiafoe is an obvious favourite but at 1/5 those seem rather short odds. Johnson has shown he can fight even if he cannot finish and we think he should win a set here.

Tip: Johnson to win a set – Yes: 8/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
