Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

Pavlyuchenkova leads Tomljanovic 2-0 in their head-to-head, winning in Moscow (2018) and at the Phillip Island Trophy earlier this year.

Their second-round match at Roland Garros will be their first match on clay.

Pavlyuchenkova Humbles McHale

Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova produced a clinical performance in her opening round, beating American Christina McHale 6-4 6-0 in just 79 minutes.

Pavlyuchenkova, who is coming off a semifinal run in Madrid, was forced to miss the Italian Open due to injury. However, she barely showed any rustiness to subdue the World No. 79 McHale.

The Russian also improved on her Roland Garros first-round record. Historically, Pavlyuchenkova has only lost two opening-round matches since she made her tournament debut in 2008.

Seeded 31 this fortnight, Pavlyuchenkova fired six aces and won 71% of first-serve points in beating the American. She charged to the net 12 times and won eight points, giving McHale little room to settle. She also fired 24 winners but coughed up 22 errors clearly illustrating her risk tolerance.

Next up will the unseeded Aussie, Ajla Tomljanovic.

Tomljanovic Beats Kozlova in Straight Sets

Ajla Tomljanovic had a testing afternoon of her own as she eased into the second round for the first time since 2015. The match was closer than what the scoreline suggested.

Tomljanovic is one 10 Australian players in action at Roland Garros this fortnight but was the lone Australian competing in singles competition on Day 1. And she recorded a 6-2 6-4 win over Kateryna Kozlova of Ukraine in one hour and 41 minutes.

The 28-year-old won 70% of first-serve points and converted six out of nine breakpoints. She will certainly hope to improve on her winners’ count which was one more than Kozlova (17 in total).

There was a cloud of uncertainty regarding Tomljanovic’s fitness after she was forced to retire in Belgrade whilst playing Rebecca Peterson last week. Eventually, Tomljanovic explained she pulled a muscle and her retirement was precautionary.

Tomljanovic has not advanced past the second round at Roland Garros since the 2014 season in which she reached the second week.

Pavlyuchenkova v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Pavlyuchenkova seems to have turned a corner during the clay swing after a terrible start to the season. While Tomljanovic will be no pushover, she is erratic and is more prone to cough up errors.

Tip: Pavlyuchenkova to win: 8/13 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
