Kudermetova Marches Past Anisimova

World No. 30 Veronika Kudermetova won her third successive first-round match at the French Open, defeating 19-year-old American Amanda Anisimova in straight sets on Sunday.

The 29th seed Russian was given a tough fight by the American in the opening set, but once she edged ahead in the match by winning the first-set tie-break there was no stopping her as she dominated the next set to win the contest 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 in an hour and 22 minutes.

Both players had broken each other twice in the first set, but Kudermetova didn’t allow the World No. 41 a single break point in the second, while she broke her two more times.

The Russian, who is known for her aggressive approach, had 26 winners and 16 unforced errors compared to her opponent’s 15 winners and 17 unforced errors.

Making her third appearance at Roland Garros, Kudermetova had reached the third round in 2019 and the second round in 2020.

This has been a splendid year for the Russian, who captured her maiden title in Charleston and finished runner-up in Abu Dhabi. She also made it to the semifinals in Istanbul and reached the third rounds in Miami, Madrid and Rome.

The 24-year-old right-hander began the season in Abu Dhabi by knocking out higher-ranked players in Annett Kontaveit and Elina Svitolina en route to her first WTA final. However, she couldn’t capture the title, finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka.

Later, at the Volvo Car Open in Charleston, Kudermetova got another chance of winning a maiden title and this time she didn’t miss out on the opportunity, defeating Danka Kovinic in the final in straight sets. The Russian was so dominant throughout the tournament that she didn’t drop a set in any of her six matches.

Sunday’s win improved her to 25-11 in 2021.

Siniakova Holds off Bouzkova

Facing Kudermetova in the next round will be World No. 68 Katerina Siniakova, who kept compatriot Marie Bouzkova winless at Roland Garros, handing her a third consecutive first-round defeat on Parisian clay.

Siniakova was off to a quick start, winning the first six games of the match, before Bouzkova fought back to force the decider. The former however took control of the third set to win the match 6-0, 4-6, 6-2 in two hours and 33 minutes.

The 25-year-old, who had 20 break points in the match, broke Bouzkova’s serve on seven occasions, while saving 3 of 6 break points that she faced. Siniakova also hit 31 winners to Bouzkova’s 23  and made 46 unforced errors to her opponent’s 47.

The win improved Siniakova to 7-8 in 2021 and 6-3 on clay this year. She had reached the quarterfinals in Istanbul last month and the semifinals in Parma this month.

Her stunning run in Parma was highlighted by a Round of 16 win over top seed Serena Williams. Siniakova was eventually beaten by Cori Gauff in a three-set semifinal.

A two-time Grand Slam doubles champion, Siniakova has featured in five WTA finals, winning the titles in Shenzhen and Bastad in 2017.

Kudermetova v Siniakova Prediction and Tip

This is going to be a tricky outing for the 29th seed Kudermetova. Although she is ranked higher and is in terrific form, she will be wary of the experienced Siniakova, who will be aiming for a fourth consecutive third round appearance at the French Open.

Tip: Kudermetova to win in straight sets: 10/11 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
