Elise Mertens v Zarina Diyas Head to Head
Mertens leads Diyas by 1-0, last beating her in the Fed Cup Qualifiers in 2020 with 1-6, 6-2, 6-2.
Mertens has it Easy in the Opener
14th seed Mertens started her French Open campaign with a clinical 6-4, 6-1 win against the Australian qualifier Storm Sanders. Off to a good start, the Belgian will now look to build upon her recent form on the tour and hopefully, crack the top 10.
She has had a fairly decent run on the clay courts this season, having reached the final in the WTA Istanbul Cup. Even though she lost to Sorana Cirstea in the final, that performance there helped her improve her form on the surface.
Plus, she followed that with a quarterfinal run in the Madrid Open where she beat Simona Halep en route. Ultimately, she fell to her doubles partner Aryna Sabalenka.
Her most recent tournament was the Italian Open where she was beaten by Veronika Kudermetova in the opener.
Considering her overall form, Mertens has had quite a decent season. She won the Gippsland Trophy in January by beating two top 10 players – Naomi Osaka and Elina Svitolina. Post that, then reached the fourth round in the Australian Open and Miami Open, in addition to reaching the semifinal in WTA Dubai. It is worth mentioning that she also won the Australian Open doubles with Sabalenka.
Diyas Looking to Turn her Form Around
Diyas didn’t face a lot of difficulties in her opening round match against the British Heather Watson. She moved past her opponent in straight sets with 6-4, 7-5, to reach the second round in Paris.
The Kazakh has never made it past this stage in the tournament in all her appearances since 2010.
Moreover, she has had a pretty uneventful run on clay this season with just two wins in two tournaments. The 27-year-old reached the second round in WTA Charleston but failed to build upon it. She lost her first-round bouts in Istanbul and Strasbourg while in the Madrid Open, she was beaten in the qualifiers itself.
She looked fairly better at the start of the season on hard courts, having reached the third round in the Australian Open and the Phillip Island Trophy.
Mertens v Diyas Prediction and Tip
Mertens is significantly ahead in terms of experience, form, and momentum. She has had a much better season and is coming off a good run in the clay swing.
Expect her to dispatch the Kazakh in straight sets.
