Sakkari Starts Strong in Paris

Maria Sakkari, currently ranked World No. 18, is off to a good start here in the French Open. She met the Ukrainian qualifier Katarina Zavatska in the first round and defeated her 6-4, 6-1 in an hour and 29 minutes. However, that game saw her commit 32 unforced errors, implying that things could have been very well different for the Greek had it been a stronger opponent.

Nonetheless, Sakkari is having a wonderful season having made it into the top 20 for the first time in her career. She started the season with strong semifinal performances in the WTA Abu Dhabi and Grampians Trophy where she defeated big guns like Garbine Muguruza, Sofia Kenin, and Angelique Kerber.

She had a similar run in the Miami Open too where she fell in the semis to Bianca Andreescu. On clay courts, however, Sakkari has not been this efficient.

Barring Madrid Open where she reached the third round, the 25-year-old Greek has lost in the early rounds of WTA Stuttgart and the Italian Open.

Paolini Looking to Better her French Open Record

This is the fifth time that Jasmine Paolini is competing in the Roland Garros. In her last four appearances, her best run came last season when she reached the second round. Now, she looks to better that record.

However, it is a big ask of the Italian as she hasn’t played with as finesse and form as her Greek adversary this season. Except for the WTA 125K Series event in France a few weeks back where she was the runner-up, Paolini has lost her opening-round games in all other tournaments.

In the Gippsland Trophy, however, she did reach the third round.

Paolini got her ticket to the main draw on the back of Simona Halep’s withdrawal from the competition. She beat the Swiss Stefanie Voegele 7-5, 6-1 in the first round to make the most of her chance to deliver a good performance in Paris.

Sakkari v Paolini Prediction and Tip

Sakkari should get this one comfortably; she has the form and experience needed to beat the Italian.
