Djokovic Clinical In Opener

World number one and 2016 French Open champion Novak Djokovic is in search of a second Roland Garros win and a 19th major over the next fortnight.

Djokovic started the season well being undefeated at the ATP Cup and registering a ninth Aussie Open title at the start of the season. An abdominal tear saw him out for the rest of the hard court and indoor season, returning only for the clay swing at Monte Carlo.

It was a mixed clay court season for the Serb building up to the French Open, with early losses at Monte Carlo and Belgrade-1 and then a final run at Rome before losing out to arch rival Rafa Nadal. Djokovic played at his home tournament Belgrade-2 last week and added another title to his cap and came in to Roland Garros high on confidence.

In the same half of the draw as Rafa Nadal and Roger Federer, the world number one was aware how crucial it was to start well here in Paris, and so he did. Up against American Tennys Sandgren, Djokovic was in clinical form with his serve, return and groundstrokes. A good challenge by Sandgren looks completely lost in the score line.

Djokovic prevailed in straight sets 6-2,6-4, 6-2 and breezed through to the second round looking sharp and focused as he and Nadal chase Grand Slam glory with Roger Federer making a comeback to Grand Slam tennis too.

Confidence Seeking Win for Cuevas

Pablo Cuevas has been on the tour for a decade and a half and was once ranked as high as number 19 in the world.  Comfortable on the clay, he is the winner of six ATP titles. However, the 35-year-old has not been consistent in recent times and is ranked just within the top 100 in the world.

The Uruguayan skipped most of the season after the Aussie Open and returned to the tour for the onset of clay. It was not the most impressive of clay court seasons with early losses at the first few tournaments he appeared in. However, he had a better run at the Geneva Open ATP 250 two weeks before Roland Garros and made the final four losing to Denis Shapovalov, who himself had a good run on clay before an injury ruled him out of the French Open.

Cuevas began his campaign at the French Open against Frenchman Lucas Pouille who himself is returning after a long layoff from the tour. Pouille once a top ten player on the tour was short on match practice and form and that was evident as the experienced Cuevas prevailed in straight sets dropped only seven games in the match.

Djokovic v Cuevas Prediction and Tip

Uruguay’s Cuevas is a natural on the clay and looked good in his opener, but none of that matters when you run into Novak Djokovic. The Serb is hungry and focused and there is no stopping him here by anyone less than Rafa Nadal. Expect a straight sets win for the world number one
