The 2017 US Open has thrown up an interesting draw in the women’s singles competition while the men’s competition has killed off the possibility of a Rafael Nadal-Roger Federer final.

World number one Nadal has been placed in the same half of the draw as Federer which means the latest these two legends of the game will face each other at this year’s US Open is the semi-final.

After the withdrawals of Novak Djokovic, Stan Wawrinka, Kei Nishikori and Milos Raonic, a repeat of the Australian Open final between Nadal and Federer looked to have brightened but those have now been quashed.

Nadal could face one of Grigor Dimitrov, who won the Cincinnati Open, or David Goffin in the quarter-final before his potential match-up with Federer in the semis. While Nadal leads Federer 23-14 on their head to head, they have never played each other at Flushing Meadows.

Andy Murray will be in action for the first time as well since his Wimbledon exit and takes on Tennys Sandgren in his opening round match. He could face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarter-finals while the fourth seeded and a man looking to take over the mantle of one of the top players in the world, Alexander Zverev might lie in wait in the semi-finals.

In the women’s section of the draw, 147th-ranked Maria Sharapova, who was given a wild-card to participate in the US Open, has drawn the second seeded Simona Halep in her opener, in what will be one of the early matches to watch.

The winner of this encounter could go on to face Johanna Konta in the quarter-final, while Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza could face one of Caroline Wozniacki and Venus Williams in her last-eight encounter.

Karolina Pliskova is the top seed in the women’s draw and she could be up against Svetlana Kuznetsova in the last eight.

Defending champion Angelique Kerber hasn’t had the best of times after winning her title last year and she might need to overcome Jelena Ostapenko and Elina Svitolina to even make the semi-finals.
