Marketa Vondrousova v Polona Hercog Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came at the 2020 Italian Open and Vondrousova had won that in three hard-fought sets.

Vondrousova Hustles Past Harmony

After getting taken to three sets in the first round by Kaia Kanepi, Vondrousova did not waste too much in carving out a win over Frenchwoman Harmony Tan to make it to the round of 32.

In a match which lasted just over an hour, Vondrousova demolished Tan 6-1, 6-3 to show signs of returning back to form after an underwhelming start to the clay season.

The Czech had been expected to do a lot better than her 1-3 win-loss start, coming into the tournament on the back of three successive defeats. And when she had lost the first set of her opener to Kanepi, the writing looked to be on the wall.

Instead Vondrousova has fought back rather well, winning four sets in a row and dropping just seven games in that period.

Tan was broken four times while Vondrousova faced three break-points and saved all of them to ease her way past her opponent. Can she now overcome the 73rd-ranked Hercog?

Hercog Overcomes Odds, Garcia

She wasn’t quite the favourite going into her second round match against Caroline Garcia but Hercog did enough to clinch a straight set win and move into round three for the third time at Roland Garros.

Hercog, who had earlier sent Kiki Bertens out, defeated Garcia 7-5, 6-4 in an hour and 42 minutes. She broke her opponent two times in each set, losing her own serve once but in the second set specially, she had already taken the match by its horns when she was broken.

Incidentally, Hercog’s last main draw win at WTA clay had come at last year’s French Open where she had made round two.

This year, she has already participated in four clay court competitions on the WTA circuit and lost her openers at each one of them. Which is why a third round berth at Roland-Garros as a huge surprise to go with a major confidence-booster.

It’s a different matter that going into round four will need a lot more than just confidence.

Vondrousova v Hercog Prediction and Tip

No surprises who the favourite but mildly surprised Vondrousova isn’t shorter than 1/2 for her win. Which is why would have to go with her for this one.
