Federer Back In Paris As He Preps For the Grass, On Clay
Roger Federer continued his return to the tour and to the Grand Slams with a second round match against 2014 Wimbledon champion Marin Cilic. The match was regarded by many as a good indicator of Federer’s level and fitness as he was up against a former major champion and someone who would test him much more than his opening round opponent Denis Istomin whose game was not all there in the opener.
Coming in with a 9-1 head-to-head, Federer started as the clear favorite and wrapped up the first set 6-2 in no time. However, one did not expect Cilic to go away without a fight and he did not. He held off the pressure from Federer early in the second and broke quickly to be up 3-0. There was a heated argument between Federer and the chair umpire that later involved Cilic as well at 3-1,40-40 pertaining to a time violation given to the Swiss around time with the towels in between points. Federer seemed a bit unsettled after and lost the second set soon thereafter 2-6.
The Swiss seemed in good shape in the third up 3-1 with three break points on the Cilic serve but a sudden lapse from Federer saw Cilic win a flurry of points and go up 4-3. Both men held serve well to force a third set tiebreak where Federer was clinical winning it 7-4.
The fourth set opened up with a difficult Federer service game but the Swiss served excellent all set thereafter breaking the Croat twice to win the match 6-3 in the fourth and surprise himself as he said as to how he was able to match the level and make the third round of the French Open for the 16th time.

Decent Season For Clay Courter Koepfer
German Dominik Koepfer broke into the top 50 of the ATP rankings for the first time last month. The left hander is a natural clay courter who exhibits grit and drive regularly on a tennis court.
After an unimpressive start to the season he made a good run at the Mexico Open in Acupulco where he made the semi-finals before losing to eventual champion Alexander Zverev.
While he was expected to hit good form on the slower dirt, his clay build-up was not overly impressive. Opening round losses at Monte Carlo and Barcelona was followed by a second round back in Munich and then in Madrid. It was better run in Geneva where he lost in the quarter-finals to eventual champion Casper Ruud.
It has not been a difficult draw for him yet at the French Open, but he did well to prevail in four sets against American Taylor Fritz who was suffering from an injury. But, the German has done as well as he ever has at the French Open now and sets himself up for a big match against Swiss maestro Roger Federer.
Federer v Koepfer Prediction and Tip
These two players have never met before and Koepfer will be a bit of an unknown entity for Federer. Koepfer is a natural clay courter and a left hander so will pose challenges for Federer. The German is gritty and goes for his shots and will look to indulge Federer in long rallies.
Expect a good battle and it remains to be seen how well the Swiss has recovered from his second round physically. Federer should be feeling good after his Cilic encounter and outcome and can be expected to prevail in four sets.
Tip: Federer to win in four sets: 4/6 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
