McHale in Form Struggles for the Season

She has barely won a match this season and comes into the grass court swing on the back of four successive defeats on clay. And even earlier in the year, McHale won just one main draw match, one that came at the Charleston Open which saw her overcome Sara Errani.

On hard court surfaces this season, she has been beaten six times with her only victory coming in the qualifiers of Adelaide International.

This comes as bit of a surprise after McHale had begun showing some of her better form, closing in on what she had when she had reached the top 25 in the world. Back to back quarterfinals at the Acapulco Open and another third round appearance at the Cincinnati Open after having started out as a qualifier helped.

Unfortunately for her, a poor finish on clay and the kind of start she has had this year makes it difficult for her to start off the grass swing with any kind of confidence.

Garcia Perez Wins as a Lucky Loser

She has barely played all season which is why Garcia Perez’s ranking has fallen to 184th in the world. And it looked like her grass swing had begun on a sour note too when she lost her qualifying round in straight sets to Katie Volynets.

Fortunes changed when Garcia Perez was sent into the main draw as a lucky loser which she then converted with a three-set win over Britain’s Francesca Jones.

In a match lasting two hours and 24 minutes Garcia Perez overcame a first set deficit to defeat her opponent in three to set up a second round meeting with McHale. Not to mention, this was her first career-win ever on WTA grass and first overall since 2016.

Can she now take this run forward against another struggling player?
