Davis Twice Made Third Round at Wimbledon

Davis has twice been to the third round at Wimbledon, which is as good as she has managed at any Grand Slam event.

The American did not come into the tournament in the best of form, having lost in the first round of both majors this year, and having only made one third round appearance in 2021, which was in Charleston.

However, having been given a first round bye, she has at least emulated that after a hard fought win over Harriet Dart of Great Britain, the world 143.

It was Dart who started much the stronger, saving six break points and then breaking the American in the next game,. Dart saved another break point and then broke Davis for a second time, serving out for the set.

The score line was tough on Davis and she fought back, breaking the Briton early on in the second set. However, Dart was soon level, and Davis had to do it all again, breaking Dart for s second time and then serving out to level.

The tide finally turned when Dart was broken early in the third set. This time there was no way back for her and the rest of the match went with serve.

Riske is a Former Nottingham Finalist

Riske was a beaten finalist in Nottingham in 2016, and she has won a grass court title, lifting the trophy in Rosmalen two years ago.

However, having been given a bye in the first round, her progress in the event this year was almost over before it started having been pushed all the way by Xiyu Wang of China, the world 145,  in a match that stretched over two days.

Riske found herself under pressure in her opening service game and had to survive three break points, although that turned out to be a temporary reprieve, as she was broken four games later. The American hit back with a break of her own, only to once more dropping her serve and Wang took the set in the following game.

Things looked bleak for the American when she dropped her serve once more in the opening game of the second set, but she hit back to level once more. However, another dropped serve that Wang had the chance to serve for the match.  She could not take it, however, and this time it was Riske who took her chances and broke once more to force a deciding net.

By that time though, the light had faded and rest of  the match was postponed until Thursday.

Initially the break seemed to favour the Chinese player. She immediately put the Riske serve under pressure and broke her in the third game. However, the American broke back and then, with Wang serving to stay in the match, finally broke once more  to finally seal the win.

Davis v Riske Prediction and Tip

Despite Davis having a 100% head to head record, Riske will start the favourite as an accomplished grass court player. She will have to play better though than she did in her second round match against a lowly ranked Chinese opponent.
