This will be a first meeting between the 32-year-old Cilic and the 22-year-old Austrian.

Cilic Dumps Out the Top Seed

Former World No. 3 Marin Cilic knocked out top seed Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinal of the Stuttgart Open on Friday to move into a third semifinal in 2021.

The 32-year-old Croatian needed an hour and 51 minutes to beat the Canadian 7-5, 7-6 (7-3). Cilic won 74% service points and 38% return points while his opponent won 64% service points and 28% return points in the match.

Cilic, who improved to 12-9 in 2021 after Friday’s victory, has won more than 70% of his matches on grass courts and two of his 18 titles have come on the surface at Queen’s.

The 2014 U.S. Open champion was also a finalist at Wimbledon in 2017, losing to Roger Federer after being hampered by a blister.

Currently ranked 47th in the world, the 6’6″ Cilic is yet to drop a set this week. He began his Stuttgart challenge with a 7-5, 6-3 opening-round win against Germany’s Rudolf Molleker, and then defeated the fifth seed Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-3, 6-2 in the Round of 16.

The Croatian, who had a 0-2 start which included a first-round defeat to Grigor Dimitrov at the Australian Open, reached the semifinals at the Singapore Open and the Estoril Open, but failed to make the finals after falling to Alexei Popyrin and Cameron Norrie respectively.

In another significant performance this year, Cilic reached the Round of 16 in Miami, before falling to Andrey Rublev.

Rodionov Stuns De Minaur

He didn’t win a match on grass before the start of this tournament, and was expected to stay winless in Stuttgart as well, but three rounds later, World No. 142 Jurij Rodionov finds himself in the semifinals of the ATP 250 in Germany.

Rodionov, who began the tournament with a stunning come-from-behind victory over Germany’s Dominik Koepfer, found himself a set down once again in the quarterfinal against fourth seed Alex de Minaur on Friday, but yet again the 22-year-old showed his ability to dig deep as he rallied to beat the Australian 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4).

The 22-year-old Austrian saved a match point at 5-6 in the third set and then took control of the tiebreak to beat the World No. 22 in two hours and 14 minutes.

In the first round, the Austrian had beaten World No. 59 Koepfer 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 in an hour and 48 minutes.

His second round match against another German Peter Gojowczyk ended with the German retiring with an injury after Rodionov had taken a 5-3 lead in the first set.

A three-time champion at the Challenger level, Rodionov reached a fourth Challenger final earlier this year, finishing runner-up to Mackenzie McDonald in Nur Sultan.

Cilic v Rodionov Prediction and Tip

The vastly experienced Cilic will be the favourite to go through, but he will be wary of the unfancied Austrian, who has shown his ability to fight and surprise better opponents.
