Jelena Ostapenko v Lauren Davis Head to Head

They have split the previous two meetings.

Davis won the semifinal in Auckland in 2017 when Ostapenko had to retire while she trailed the American 6-4, 4-6, 1-4.

The Latvian won in Strasbourg in straight sets last year.

Inconsistency a Problem for Ostapenko

Ever since winning her third career title in Luxembourg in 2019, the 2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko has struggled with form, exiting most tournaments early, without making deep runs.

She reached just one quarterfinal last year, falling to Nao Hibino in Strassbourg, and has just one last-eight appearance this year, reaching the quarterfinals of the Italian Open. It was her first quarterfinal at a WTA 1000 event since 2018. However, she missed out on a semifinal spot after going down to Karolina Pliskova.

A solid grass court player, Ostapenko has a 21-12 record on the surface, which includes a run to the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2018 and the quarterfinals in 2017.

Having finally found some consistency in Italy, the 24-year-old would have hoped to carry that form to Roland Garros, but she was edged out in the first round by America’s Sofia Kenin.

Ostapenko will hope to put that disappointment behind quickly and hit the court running in Birmingham.

Davis Will Aim for Another Good Show in Birmingham

Facing Ostapenko in the first round will be 27-year-old Lauren Davis, who reached the semifinals of the first grass court event of the year in Nottingham.

The World No. 86 got a tad lucky in Nottingham after her quarterfinal opponent Katie Boulter retired with an injury despite leading by a set. Davis began the tournament with a come-from-behind win against Britain’s Harriett Dart in the Round of 32. She lost the first set again in the Round of 16 but once again recovered to defeat compatriot and second seed Alison Riske.

The 27-year-old was eventually beaten by China’s Zhang Shuai in the semifnials.

Davis is a decent player on grass and has reached the third round at Wimbledon twice, in 2014 and in 2019.

The winner of the Auckland title in 2017 comes to Birmingham with an 11-10 overall record in 2021. Some of her significant performances included a run to the quarterfinals in Guadalajara and a third-round finish in Charleston.

She will be hoping to build on her Nottingham exploits in Birmingham.

Ostapenko v Davis Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko has been inconsistent and will have to adapt to grass having not played on the surface since 2019. Davis already found some success in Nottingham and so she will have a slight edge going into this. Won’t be a surprise if the unseeded American causes an upset in the first round.
