Fiona Ferro v Kristina Mladenovic Head to Head

All their previous three meetings were in 2019 and Mladenovic leads the matchup 2-1, winning in straight sets in Rome and Roland Garros.

Ferro won a close three-setter at the U.S. Open.

Ferro Yet to Find Her Feet on Grass

World No. 51 Fiona Ferro comes to Birmingham with an 8-7 record in 2021.

The 24-year-old, who won titles in Lausanne in 2019 and in Palermo in 2020, has struggled to deliver consistent results all year, with her best performances coming in Lyon, where she reached the semifinals, and at the Australian Open, where she reached the Round of 32 for the first time in her career.

Ferro got the better of Katerina Siniakova and Elena Rybakina in Melbourne before falling to Iga Swiatek.

In Lyon, she reached the final four by defeating qualifier Magdalina Frech and Tereza Martincova in the first two rounds and then knocked out Clara Burel in the quarterfinals before falling to Viktorija Golubic.

Ferro also reached the last eight in Istanbul but retired after losing the first set to Sorana Cirstea.

Yet to find her feet on grass, the Frenchwoman was knocked out of the first rounds in Eastbourne and Wimbledon in 2019.

Mladenovic Will Hope to Start Well

Ferro will face World No. 61 Kristina Mladenovic in the first round. The 28-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of No. 10 in 2017, comes to Birmingham having reached the quarterfinals in Nottingham earlier this week.

All three of Mladenovic’s matches in Nottingham needed three sets. She overcame Japan’s Kurumi Nara in the first match and America’s Caty McNaly in the next, before going down fighting to Zhang Shuai in thrilling third set tiebreak.

The Frenchwoman, who won one title in St. Petersburg in 2017, and finished runner-up in seven other tournaments, has a 13-16 record in 2021.

A winner of five Grand Slam doubles and two mixed doubles titles, Mladenovic has reached the third round of the Wimbledon singles twice (in 2015 and 2018). She has more wins than losses on the surface and would be looking to go deep in Birmingham as well.

Ferro v Mladenovic Prediction and Tip

Ferro is the seeded player, but may need time to adjust to grass. Her opponent has already spent a fair amount of time on the surface this week and will count on her past experience to begin the tournament with a win.
