The pair have never met before. This will be the first match between the 27-year old Australian, and the German, who is five years younger.

Thompson, Runner-Up in Rosmalen Two Years Ago

Thompson does not have a good record at Wimbledon, having appeared there four times and lost in the first round on each occasion.

However, that does not mean he cannot play on grass – two years ago he reached the final of the tournament in Rosmalen, eventually losing to the Frenchman Adrian Mannarino.

That remains the Australian’s only senior final to date, although he has achieved considerable success on the junior tours, winning 12 tournaments, nine on hard courts, and three on clay.

His best result in 2021 came at the Melbourne warm-up event, the Great Ocean Road Open, where he got to the quarter-finals.

Since then, he has never been beyond the second round of any tournament and was a  first round casualty at the French Open, beaten in four sets by the Spaniard Jaume Munar.

In his first tournament of the year in grass last week in Stuttgart, he beat the Argentine Guido Pella in the first round, but then lost in three sets to his countryman, Alex de Minaur.

Local Lad Altmaier Gets a Wildcard

Altmaier has been given a wildcard into this event on home soil.

The German made a name for himself at the French Open last year, when he reached the fourth round, beating Feliciano Lopez, Jann-Lennard Struff and Matteo Berrettini along the way, before eventually losing to Pablo Carreno Busta.

That though remains the only time he has qualified for a Grand Slam of any type, although a series of hip and shoulder injuries have impeded his tennis career.

He spends the majority of his time on the Challenger circuit, but he has twice managed to qualify for the main draw of two senior ATP events, this year in Geneva and Parma, and was given direct entry into the event in Santiago. Unfortunately, he was beaten at the first round stage on every occasion,

He was last in action in a clay court event in Lyon, where he reached the third round before losing in three sets to the Japanese player Taro Daniel.

Altmaier has no known form on grass.

Thompson v Altmaier Prediction and Tip

Thompson, who has a prior grass court final under his belt, and played in two matches in Stuttgart last week, should win this match easily against a local wildcard who has no history of success on the surface.
