Kristyna Pliskova v CoCo Vandeweghe Head to Head

Pliskova has won both of their previous meetings, defeating Vandeweghe in Birmingham in 2013 and in Auckland in 2014. Both of those previous matches were nail-biting three-setters.

Pliskova Having a Torrid Time

Kristyna Pliskova has been in terrible form this year. The 29-year-old left-hander is yet to win a main-draw match in 2021, having lost all eight of them so far.

Her only wins this year came at the Qatar Open qualifiers, where she won all three of her qualifying rounds to reach the main draw.

Pliskova, who reached a career-high ranking of 35 in 2017, reached two semifinals in Prague and Shenzhen last year but has struggled to win matches this year.

The 2016 Tashkent champion and 2017 Prague Open runner-up, Pliskova reached the quarterfinals in Birmingham in 2019. She defeated Romania’s Mihaela Buzarnescu in the first round and then edged out her twin Karolina Pliskova in the next round, before falling to Barbora Strycova in the last eight.

Having failed to perform on hard and clay surfaces, Pliskova will be hoping for a change of fortune on grass with a winning start in Birmingham.

Vandeweghe Also Searching for Form

Facing Pliskova in the first round will be another player struggling for form, CoCo Vandeweghe.

The former World No. 9, who is a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, has struggled since injuring her right ankle at the Wimbledon in 2018. She also tested positive for coronavirus last year and suffered a finger injury. As a result of these untoward happenings, Vandewghe has seen a steep fall in the rankings.

Currently ranked 224th in the world, the American has not won a main draw match on the Tour this year, losing in the first rounds in Acapulco, Guadalajara, Monterrey and the WTA 250 in Charleston.

A two-time major semifinalist, Vandeweghe was 0-2 last year and 1-3 in 2019. She has featured in six WTA finals, winning two of them and both came on the grass courts of ‘s-Hertogenbosch (in 2014 and 2016).

Pliskova v Vandeweghe Prediction and Tip

It’s going to be an interesting battle between two players desperately looking for a first main draw win in 2021. Pliskova will be a slight favourite, she has played more than Vandeweghe over the last two years and has won more matches as well.
