Federer Prevails In Challenging Opener

10- time Halle champion and defending champion from 2019 Roger Federer returned to the grass for what he called ‘ the start of his season’ . The Swiss was away from the tour for 14 months and has since made sparing returns at Doha, Geneva and at the French Open earlier this month.

Federer withdrew after three wins at the French Open, stating that given the tight schedule and the focus on the grass, he would not like to risk injury or hasten his recovery.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion began his defense of the Halle title against young Belarusian Ilya Ivashka in the opening round and it was a challenging contest. Ivashka was off to a phenomenal serving start holding to love in four games and only dropping two points on serve in the opening set before the tie-breaker. On the other hand, Federer too was strong on serve despite having to fend off a couple break points, but did still feel the rust in his legs and the adjustment process that comes with a first match on grass.

The Swiss upped the ante in the tie-break to go up 6-1 and then closed the opening set 7-4 in the breaker.

The second set started with a similar run for the Belarusian on serve, but Federer was stronger on the return creating more opportunities for himself and continuing to be clinical on serve. Down 4-5, Ivashka faced a break point and match point but held out strong. However, on 5-6 down 0-40, there were three more match points against the Belarusian serve for Federer and an error on 30-40 by Ivashka saw Federer open his campaign with a win, awaiting his next opponent with a day off on Tuesday.

Auger-Aliassime Meets His Idol For First Time

Felix Auger- Aliassime did not have the best of clay seasons and that could not have been good for his morale or confidence coming into the grass swing. He had a 4-6 win loss record on clay with a quarter-final appearance in Barcelona and unimpressive at most other venues including Roland Garros.

The Canadian had a good season on the grass in 2019 where he was a runner-up here to Matteo Berrettini, a semi-finalist at Queens and lost in the round of 32 at Wimbledon.

Auger-Aliassime had a good run in Stuttgart last week making his eighth ATP final but lost in straight sets to 2014 US Open champion Marin Cilic, as the young Canadian remains in search for his first ever title. He has  carried the good form over to Halle with a convincing opening round win over Miami Open champion Hubert Hurkacz in straight sets.

The rising star from Canada now plays none other than his childhood idol and former world number one Roger Federer at the senior statesman’s  strong suite on the grass of Halle.

Federer v Auger- Aliassime Prediction and Tip

This promises to be an exciting match given both players having weapons on grass. Auger-Aliassime has always idolized Federer and nerves may get the better of him though. Expect a good contest and no easy matches for Federer even on grass it seems, but the Swiss maestro should prevail in two tight sets.
