Coco Vandeweghe v Ajla Tomljanovic Head to Head

The two ladies have met just once on the WTA Tour. That meeting took place in the 2017 WTA Stanford, where Vandeweghe was up 6-2 before Tomljanovic retired from that game with an injury.

Vandeweghe Continues her Long Road to Former Glory

29-year-old Coco Vandeweghe at one point in time was looking determined to ascend into the top 10. This was back in 2017 after which, a slew of illnesses and a serious ankle injury completely knocked her out of form and later, action.

By 2019 August, when she competed in her first professional event in over 10 months, her ranking was #636. Later that year, the American did well to reach the finals of a couple of low-tier events on the ITF and 125K circuits. However, the 2020 pandemic-stricken season did not bode well for Vandeweghe’s chances of rebuilding her game.

Fast forward to 2021 where she had a late start to her season in Guadalajara. With a win-loss tally of 3-7, it is quite evident that she is not having the best of times on the tour. In all the tournament she has played in so far, including an ITF event, Vandeweghe has fallen in the first round itself. (She picked up those three wins in qualifying games).

However, she has done well to turn it all around here in Birmingham. As a qualifier, she won her two matches and started off in the main draw with a straight-set win over Kristyna Pliskova. Perhaps, last week’s stint in Nottingham served as a good practice run for her.

Tomljanovic Survives a Thriller against Mertens

Tomljanovic is heading in this match after delivering one of the biggest wins of her season. She overcame the Birmingham top seed, Belgian No. 1 Elise Mertens in three gruelling sets, each of which went into the tie-breaker.

The Aussie took the game 7-6(5), 6-7(5), 7-6(4) in three hours and 13 minutes. It was a very close match where Tomljanovic somehow managed to outclass the Belgian and emerged as the winner.

Keeping aside the exhaustion of that marathon game, she now faces an opponent who has been out of form for quite some time. In comparison to her, the 28-year-old has certainly had a much better season.

Tomljanovic reached the second round in the Italian Open, Serbia Open, and French Open, and the third round in the WTA Charleston. Even though her entire season is marked with these kinds of early-round exits, it is still more tennis and more wins than her American adversary.

Vandeweghe v Tomljanovic Prediction and Tip

Vandeweghe is far from what she used to be and that is something that Tomljanvoic will look to exploit, preferably as soon as possible. Being a two-time Rosmalen Championships winner, the American is more than familiar with grass courts and may very well find her groove soon.

Expect this to be another fiercely contested affair in Birmingham.
