Mladenovic Takes Out the Seventh Seed

France’s Kristina Mladenovic recovered after losing the first set to beat seventh seed and compatriot Fiona Ferro in the first round in Birmingham on Wednesday.

Mladenovic saved five of 11 break points and converted seven of 14 to beat the World No. 51, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

Three sets are becoming a norm for Mladenovic on grass, who has played four on the surface this year and all four have gone the distance. Mladenovic reached the quarterfinals in Nottingham last week, defeating Kurumi Nara 6-2, 5-7, 6-2 and Caty McNally 7-6 (8-6), 1-6, 6-1. She eventually lost the last eight contest to Shuai Zhang 6-3, 2-6, 6-7 (4-7).

Mladenovic, who jumped two places to 59 this year, improved to 14-16 in 2021.

A five-time Grand Slam doubles champion and two-time mixed doubles winner, Mladenovic won her only WTA singles title in St. Petersburg in 2017, and has finished runner-up in seven other tournaments.

This is Mladenovic’s seventh appearance at the Birmingham Classic. She made it to the semifinals in 2015 and had a quarterfinal finish in 2017.

Potapova Outlasts Stojanovic

On Thursday, Mladenovic will meet Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, who too had to overcome a first-set deficit to win her first-round contest on Tuesday.

Ranked 82nd in the world, Potapova needed two hours and 39 minutes to defeat Nottingham semifinalist Nina Stojanovic 5-7, 7-6 (10-8), 6-4.

Potapova withstood 10 aces from Stojanovic, saved four of 10 break points and converted six of seven, winning a total of 108 points in a match that witnessed 213 points in all.

The 20-year-old, who reached the finals in Moscow and Tashkent in 2018, is 8-9 in the main draws this year. She reached the third round of a major for the first time in her career by winning her first two rounds in Melbourne earlier this year and then reached the quarterfinals in Dubai, her first at a WTA 1000 event.

Potapova defeated Madison Keys and Belinda Bencic en route the last eight in Dubai but fell to Barbora Krejcikova.

Mladenovic v Potapova Prediction and Tip

Potapova will be the fresher of the two, having played her three-setter a day before Mladenovic played hers. However, the Frenchwoman’s experience will give her the edge. Mladenovic also didn’t have much trouble in defeating the Russian in their only meeting in April. Expect her to advance to another quarterfinal in Birmingham.
