Jiri Vesely v Salvatore Caruso Head to Head

The pair have met once before, on hard courts, in Pune, India in early 2020, Vesely winning in straight sets.

Vesely’s Got a Solid Wimbledon Record

As a junior, Vesely reached the final of the boys’ doubles at Wimbledon and he has a good record on the senior tour there as well – on his six previous visits, twice he has made the fourth round, and on three occasions the third round, including in 2019.

At no other Grand Slam event can he claim a comparable record.

He won his second senior ATP tile in Pune last year before lockdown, but he has struggled to match those performance levels in 2021, with hs best result coming back in February.

That was when he reached the quarter-final of the Melbourne warm-up event, the Murray River Open, losing eventually to the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Since then, he has never been beyond the second round of any tournament and in his only previous match on grass this year, he was beaten in the first round of qualifying for Stuttgart.

Clay Caruso’s Natural Home

Caruso, like most Italian players, is most at home on a clay court.

All seven of his titles on the junior tours have been won on the surface, and the best he has managed on the senior tour, a doubles defeat at the Rio Open last February with partner Federico Gaio, also was on that surface.

The only time he qualified for the main draw at Wimbledon, in 2019, he lost in the first round.

Nor has he made any special preparations this year, as this will be hist first match of the year on grass. He has not played since losing in the first round of the French Open to the Australian James Duckworth.

Prior to that his form was not any better than Vesely’s, with a string of first-round defeats behind him, although he did make the second round in Monaco, eventually losing to Andrey Rublev, after coming through the qualifying competition.

Vesely v Caruso Prediction and Tip

Vesely, although not in the best of recent form, should win this match easily, because he has the track record on grass, whereas Caruso has none.
