Mertens Looking To Start Well

Elise Mertens comes to Eastbourne for the fourth time in her career, having never made it past the Round of 16 before.

The Belgian, ranked 17th in the world, made it to the second round by beating Timea Babos in 2017, but couldn’t go further after being beaten by Anasatasia Pavlyuchenkova.

In 2018, she received a first round bye and scored a convincing win over Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the Round of 16 before being sent packing by Aryna Sabalenka. In the last edition in 2019, Mertens defeated Monica Puig and Marketa Vondrousova in the first two rounds but fell in the Round of 16 to Karolina Pliskova.

She will be hoping to at least go past the Round of 16 this year. However, she hasn’t had the best of starts on grass, losing in the first round in Birmingham to Ajla Tomljanovic. The match was an epic though, which lasted over three hours before the Australian trumped the top seed 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-4).

Mertens, who reached the third round at Wimbledon in 2018 and the fourth round in 2019, has a 15-15 record on grass. The 25-year-old comes to Eastbourne with a 22-9 record in 2021.

Having lost the Linz Open final at the end of last year, Mertens began the 2021 season by winning her sixth career title by beating Kaia Kanepi in the final of the Gippsland Trophy.

The 2018 Australian Open semifinalist then reached the fourth round of the Melbourne major for the second consecutive year before making it to the semifinals of the Dubai Open for the first tine in her career.

Mertens reached a 10th final and second in 2021 by winning four in a row in Istanbul but fell in the final to Sorana Cirstea.

In another significant performance this year, Mertens reached the last eight in Madrid.

Can Gauff Keep Impressing on Grass?

Facing Mertens will be 17-year-old Cori Gauff, who is coming off her best-ever showing at a Grand Slam.

The American, who became the youngest player in the Open Era to reach the main draw at Wimbledon by qualifying at the age of 15 years and three months in 2019, reached the quarterfinals at Roland Garros this year without dropping a set, before going down to eventual champion Barbora Krejcikova in straight sets.

Previously, Gauff’s best at Grand Slams were fourth round appearances at the Wimbledon in 2019 and the Australian Open last year.

The World No. 23 is 27-10 this year and she picked up her second career title by beating China’s Qiang Wang in the final in Parma. Gauff had previously won the Linz Open title in 2019.

Gauff has shown tremendous consistency in 2021, as she also reached the semifinals in Rome and Adelaide and the quarterfinals in Dubai and Charleston.

This will be her first appearance on grass since her sensational introduction at Wimbledon in 2019, where she defeated Venus Williams, Magdalena Rybarikova and Polona Hercog in the first three rounds before losing to Simona Halep in the Round of 16.

Mertens v Gauff Prediction and Tip

Both players have been consistent performers this year, but it’s Mertens’ experience that gives her a slight advantage over Gauff. Expect the Belgian to go through to the second round.
