Victoria Azarenka v Alize Cornet Head to Head
This is a long-standing rivalry and one that is a very one-sided one. And it’s Azarenka all the way, who has won seven matches in a row against Cornet.
There has been one meeting on grass as well, with Azarenka having demolished Cornet 6-4, 6-4 at the first round stage of 2019 Wimbledon.
Azarenka Overcomes Slow Start against Hatouka
Having reached the semifinal last week in Berlin in what was her first tournament on grass since the aforementioned 2019 Wimbledon, Halep was a huge favourite going into her first round match against Yuliya Hataouka.
And while the Belarusian number two managed to carve out a straight-set win, it wasn’t without its own moments of difficulties, especially in the first set.
Azarenka needed an hour and 19 minutes to register a 7-5, 6-0 win over her 271st-ranked opponent, and seal her second round berth.
If the first set was all about breaks of serves from both the players – and Azarenka was broken three times and faced her opponent serving for the set – the world number 14 ran away with the second set without any facing any resistance from Hatouka.
She did not face a single break-point while breaking her opponent three times to seal the win. It gets slightly more difficult against Cornet though.
Cornet Needs Three Sets versus Rus
One of the reasons why Cornet had gone into her opening round match against Arantxa Rus at 1/2 odds favourite to win it was to do with her performances last week.
Not too often would you expect Cornet to get past Amanda Anisimova, Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza in the same tournament, which is exactly what the Frenchwoman did before losing to Belinda Bencic in the semifinal.
And while she did get stretched by Rus, she would take heart from the fact it was the fourth win on grass for Cornet this year. In her longish career, Cornet has managed four victories on grass in the same season just twice before this.
What Cornet will now want is to convert her solid form into a stunning result against a player who belongs to the same class as the aforementioned trio. Can Cornet go one better and seal off a fifth win for the first time?
Azarenka v Cornet Prediction and Tip
Azarenka is an overwhelming favourite here, with odds of 1/3 for her victory but that is not to say she wouldn’t be tested. Expected Cornet to win at least a set.
