Bencic Comes in As Berlin Runner-up

2015 Eastbourne champion Belinda Bencic looked in great touch on her return to grass courts last week, as she made it to the final of the German Cup in Berlin.

The Swiss player looked set to capture a fifth career title as she took the the first set in the final against Ludmilla Samsonova, but had to settle for an eighth runner-up finish after the Russian qualifier made a remarkable recovery to win 1-6, 6-1, 6-3 and claim her maiden title.

The sixth seed Bencic has a terrific 36-16 record on grass. However, she has not gone beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon yet, having reached that stage twice, in 2015 and 2018. In 2019, Bencic was beaten by Alison Riske in the third round.

Ranked No. 11 in the world, Bencic has featured in four finals on grass. Her first was in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2015, where she finished runner-up to Camila Giorgi.

Bencic picked her only title on grass in Eastbourne in 2015, defeating Poland’s Agnieszka Radwanska 6-4, 4-6, 6-0 in the final.

The Swiss player also reached the final in Mallorca in 2019, but squandered three championship points in the second set to fall to Sofia Kenin 6–7 (2–7), 7–6 (7–5), 6–4.

Overall the 24-year-old is 16-12 this year. She also made it to the final in Adelaide this year, but finished second after going down to Iga Swiatek in straight sets.

Last week in Berlin, Bencic rallied to beat Germany’s Jule Niemeier in the first round before easing past Martic in the next. In the quarterfinals, she survived another three-setter, this time taking out Ekaterina Alexandrova, before breezing past Alize Cornet in the semifinals.

Martic Will Look to Avenge Her Berlin Defeat

Facing Bencic in the first round will be World N0. 29 Petra Martic, who, too, has a winning career record on grass.

The Croatian is 15-10 overall on the surface and comes to Eastbourne with a 1-1 record on grass this year, having beaten Asia Muhammad in the first round in Berlin before falling to Bencic in the next.

The 30-year-old Martic is 11-12 this year.

She started the season slowly before finding some rhythm in Rome, where she defeated Shelby Rogers, Kristina Mladenovic, Nadia Podoroska and Jessica Pegula to reach her first-ever WTA 1000 semifinal. She eventually fell to Karolina Pliskova in the final four.

The 2019 Istanbul Open champion has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon twice, in 2017 and 2019. She also played in the semifinals in Birmingham in 2019, finishing the season with a 6-2 record on grass.
