Laura Siegemund v Tamara Korpatsch Head to Head
At the highest level, these two haven’t met before. However they did face off on the ITF circuit in 2018 where Siegemund had defeated her on clay.
Siegemund Nearly Capitulates against Bhatia
Siegemund needed two hours and 10 minutes to get going before finally carving out a three-set win over Riya Bhatia of India in her opener.
And it came on the back of a worrying performance from Siegemund who had gone into the encounter ranked more than 300 places above Bhatia. Down a set, Siegemund was also down a break in the second on two different occasions but managed to break back and pushed the set into a tie-breaker.
There, she finally came into her own by racing off to a 5-0 lead before clinching her equaliser. And in the final set, with the momentum firmly in her favour, Siegemund finished off her opponent by breaking her three times.
To be fair to the German, it was also her first match on grass in nearly two years and just the third match in four years.
Korpatsch Stuns Peterson
With no wins in main draws of competitions this season, the 143rd-ranked Korpatsch was a rank outsider going into her opener here against Rebecca Peterson. But two hours and 35 minutes later, the German had managed to carve out a three-set win over her Swedish opponent to make round two.
Korpatsch won 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 (5) to register her first win of the year.
It didn’t look like that was going to be the case when Peterson took a 3-0 lead in the first set and then served for the set at 5-3. Out of nowhere, Korpatsch found some rhythm, broke her opponent twice and clinched the opening set.
Stunned, Peterson dropped her serve yet again in the second set to go 0-2 down but then rattled off six games in a row to bring herself back into the match. And when she went 2-0 up in the third, Korpatsch’s fight looked to have ended.
It wasn’t to be the case as she broke right back and then even served for the match at 5-4 before forging a victory in the final set tie-breaker.
Can she now pull one past her countrywoman?
Siegemund v Korpatsch Prediction and Tip
Siegemund is 3/10 favourite but with Korpatsch having garnered some confidence, expecting her to pull something off here. May be a set.
