Aryna Sabalenka v Camila Giorgi Head to Head
Sabalenka leads the head-to-head 1-0, winning their only previous clash before this in the quarterfinal in Lugano in 2018. Giorgi managed to pick only three games in that match.
Sabalenka Demolishes Grass-Court Specialist Riske
Aryna Sabalenka picked up from where she left off 24 hours earlier, as she produced a near-flawless display to beat American Alison Riske 6-1 6-4 in just 67 minutes.
The top seed hammered 34 winners including ten aces, and won 85% of her first serve points. Having tasted success on grass in last weekend’s doubles title win in Berlin, Sabalenka has refined her game just in time for the Wimbledon Championships.
And in this preliminary event, the Belarusian power hitter was no match for the 30-year-old Riske. The American is a renowned grass-court specialist, having reached the quarterfinals of Wimbledon a few years ago, and won the biggest title of her career on the surface.
But Sabalenka gave a demonstration of her aggressive hitting, producing a flurry of winners in what turned out to be an afternoon of goof day’s work at the office.
Giorgi Leads Qualifiers’ Charge
It has been a good tournament for qualifiers in Eastbourne. Camila Giorgi was the latest to join the parade after backing up her stunning win over Karolina Pliskova with another impressive win over one of the tour’s most improved players in Shelby Rogers.
Giorgi had ended the Czech’s reign as the defending champion on Tuesday, and in the process usurped Pliskova’s top-10 ranking for the first time in almost five years.
The Italian got the better of Rogers after shading the return of serve points won. She won 40% of the points in that department behind the first serve (in contrast Rogers won only 17%), a key measure of her all-or-nothing approach game from the baseline.
With her three-set victory over the American, Giorgi reaches her second WTA quarterfinal of the season.
Sabalenka v Giorgi Prediction and Tip
This matchup is tennis’ version of a tornado. It is the ultimate power battle between two ferocious ball strikers on the women’s tour. The return will likely be a crucial factor in this one. The player who is able to generate constant return winners should have the upper hand, and on current form, this should be a closely-contested quarterfinal.
