Kvitova Wins A Second Three-Setter in a Row

Top seed Petra Kvitova moved into the quarterfinals of the Bad Homburg Open after eliminating World No. 7 Ann Li of the U.S. in a three-set second-round contest on Wednesday.

Kvitova, who won the first set in no time, lost the second in the tiebreak before taking control of the final set to win 6-2, 6-7 (4-7), 6-1 in an hour and 57 minutes.

The World No. 12 saved all six of the break points in the match and converted four of nine to beat the 20-year-old.

Kvitova had also needed three-set to win her opener against Poland’s Katarzyna Piter. The former no. 2 had lost the first set to the qualifier, ranked 387th in the world, before clawing her way back in the match to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 in an hour and 52 minutes.

A two-time Wimbledon champion and 2019 Australian Open runner-up, Kvitova is 18-8 this year and clinched the crown at Doha by beating Garbine Muguriza in the final to pick her 28th WTA title. The 31-year-old also reached the quarterfinals in Madrid and Stuttgart earlier this year.

Podoroska Edges Past Maria Tig

2020 French Open semifinalist Nadia Podoroska has made a solid start on grass, booking a spot in the quarterfinals at Bad Homburg with a second win in the tournament on Wednesday.

The fifth seed Argentine needed two hours and 15 minutes to defeat Romania’s Patricia Maria Tig 7-6 (7-4), 2-6, 6-4 in the second round. She had a much easier first-round outing, defeating Germany’s Mara Guth 6-0, 6-3 in an hour and three minutes on Sunday.

Ranked 39th in the world, the 24-year-old had come into the tournament with a 10-12 record this year. This will be her third quarterfinal appearance in 2021, having fallen at this on both the previous occasions. Marketa Vondrousova defeated her at the Yarra Valley Classic, while Anna Konjuh stopped her progress in Belgrade.

Yet to reach a singles final, Podoroska stunned the tennis world with her semifinal run at Roland Garros last year.

On Wednesday, both Podoroska and Tig had six break point opportunities with the Argentine breaking thrice and the Romanian enjoying four breaks of serves, but it was Podoroska who won the important moments of the match to edge ahead. There were a total of 203 points played in the match with Podoroska winning 102 of them.

Kvitova v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Kvitova is far more experienced and has a far superior record on the surface than her opponent. She would look to address the issues that forced her to play the deciders in the first two rounds and move into the semifinals without much trouble.
