Jelena Ostapenko v Elena Rybakina Head to Head

This will be their second meeting on the tour. They last met in the 2019 WTA Linz where Ostapenko prevailed in straight sets.

Ostapenko in her First Semifinal since 2019

Former World No. 5 Jelena Ostapenko will be pleased with her performance in Eastbourne International. Having made the semifinal here – her first such run since the 2019 Luxembourg Open – the Latvian will looks primed to reclaim parts of her former glory.

It is definitely not surprising to see Ostapenko play this kind of tennis. If anything, it is in line with the highlights of her career which includes a Junior Wimbledon title, 2019 Wimbledon Mixed Doubles runner-up trophy, and back to back quarterfinal appearances at the SW19 in 2017 and 2018.

In fact, it is at the Wimbledon that the 24-year-old had had the most consistent run in a Grand Slam (after winning the French Open).

Her path to redemption started with a 6-1, 6-3 win over the French Open runner-up Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova. In the next round, she beat the Birmingham Classic champion Ons Jabeur in three sets. In the quarters, she beat Daria Kasatkina (two singles titles in 2021) with 1-6, 7-5, 6-2.

That’s three big names in the week in Eastbourne Ostapenko has beaten. With her momentum, she is set for a deep run in the next week’s slam too.

Rybakina Saves a Match Point against Sevastova

No. 21 ranked Kazakh practically stole the win from Anastasija Sevastova in the quarterfinal. She saved two match points in the second-set tiebreak of the three-set affair. The last set also went into a tiebreak but this time, Rybakina was in control. She ultimately took the match 2-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(5) in a little over two and a half hours.

This win comes a day after she beat the World No. 5 Elina Svitolina in straight sets in round two. By all means, her run in Eastbourne has been quite similar to that of Ostapenko’s, making her a worthy adversary.

While her season so far hasn’t been that exciting, the 22-year-old did reach the quarterfinal in the French Open earlier this month, beating Serena Williams along the way.

Nonetheless, Rybakina had a sensational spell in 2020 where she reached five WTA finals, including the Dubai Championships and St. Petersburg Trophy. It goes without saying that she has the makings of becoming a top 10 player.

Ostapenko v Rybakina Prediction and Tip

Ostapenko enjoys a superior pedigree on grass but Rybakina has form on her side. They are evenly matched for this game, making this a close game to call. That said, both players have had long weeks and we can expect fatigue to play some role here.
