Ruud Will Be Confident After Mallorca Showing

It’s been another good year for World No. 14 Casper Ruud. The Norwegian flourished on clay as usual, but also showed that he can deliver results on hard courts. Now it’s times to prove his prowess on grass. Prior to this season, he had made just one appearance on the surface, and lost his first round match at Wimbledon 2019 to John Isner.

Things have changed since then, as Ruud won his first two career titles, reached three Masters semifinals and constantly climbed the rankings. So there will be expectations from the Norwegian to put up a better show at Wimbledon this time around and it’s only encouraging that he comes into the tournament with a 2-1 record on grass this year, which saw him reach the quarterfinals in Mallorca.

Ruud defeated former Wimbledon quarterfinalist Gilles Simon for his first career win on grass and then knocked out Tennys Sandgren to reach the quarterfinals in Mallorca this week, before going down to top seed Daniil Medvedev.

The first Norwegian to win an ATP title and reach the semifinals of a Masters 1000 tournament, Ruud is 24-8 this year. The 22-year-old reached the fourth round of the Australian Open for the first time in his career and had a third consecutive third-round finish at the French Open.

Ruud also added to his only title won at the Argentina Open last year, by defeating Denis Shapovalov in the final of the 2021 Geneva Open, and reached two Masters semifinals in Monte-Carlo and Madrid. He had also featured in the semifinals in Rome last year, but is yet to reach a Masters final.

Can Thompson End the First-Round Jinx at Wimbledon?

Jordan Thompson has made four consecutive main draw appearances at Wimbledon from 2016 to 2019, but has lost in the first round on all four occasions.

After being blown away by Roberto Bautista Agut, Albert Ramos Vinolas and Sam Querrey in the first three years, he finally won a set at Wimbledon in 2019 and then another to force the decider against Nick Kyrgios but couldn’t close out the contest and remained winless at the Championships.

He will be hoping for a change of fortune this year and he comes in with a decent 4-3 record on grass in 2021. The 27-year-old won one and lost one in Stuttgart and Halle and reached the quarterfinals in Mallorca by winning his first two rounds. However, his run came to an end with a defeat to Pablo Carreno Busta.

Ranked 76th in the world, Thompson has a 12-16 record on grass and also reached his only career final on the surface, in ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019, but is yet to win a title.

Overall, Thompson is 10-12 this year, making early exits from most tournaments, and reaching just two quarterfinals at Melbourne-1 and Mallorca.

Ruud v Thompson Prediction and Tip

Ruud’s consistency and superior game will give him a slight advantage. Thompson on the other hand has far more experience on grass and stretched Kyrgios to the limit the last time. So expect this to be a close contest, with one of them winning their first match at Wimbledon.
