Musetti won their only previous match in Rome this year. He was leading the Round of 64 contest 6-4, 2-0 when Hurkacz had to retire.

Hurkacz on a Six-Match Losing Streak

From the highs of the hard courts to the lows of clay, Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz has experienced it all this season. Now the focus is on grass and the early signs are not too encouraging as the World No. 17 heads for his third Wimbledon with a 0-2 record on the surface this year.

Hurkacz, who claimed two titles, including his first Masters 1000 title, this year, lost in the first rounds in Stuttgart and Halle and comes to Wimbledon on the back of six consecutive losses. His last win came against Italy’s Thomas Fabbiano in Monte Carlo, a week after winning the Miami Masters title. Since then, Hurkacz lost four on clay and two on grass.

The 24-year-old Pole, who is 15-11 this year, had begun the 2021 season by winning his second ATP title, defeating Sebastian Korda in the final of the Delray Beach Open. In Miami, he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in the quarterfinals, Andrey Rublev in the semis and Jannik Sinner in the final.

Hurkacz’s best-ever Grand Slam showing was at the Wimbledon in 2019, when he defeated Dusan Lajovic and Leonardo Mayer to reach the third round before going down to Novak Djokovic.

Musetti Enjoying a Great Year

Facing Hurkacz in the first round will be 19-year-old Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who will be making his grass debut at Wimbledon. This has been a phenomenal year for the Italian, who is 16-9, and has been extremely impressive.

Musetti reached the semifinals in Acapulco, by upsetting Diego Schwartzman, Frances Tiafoe and Grigor Dimitrov, before falling to Stefanos Tsitsipas. He then reached the third round at the Miami Masters for the first time and the quarterfinals in Cagliari, where he beat Dennis Novak and Dan Evans but lost to Laslo Djere.

He continued to impress in Lyon, reaching a second semifinal, by defeating Felix Auger-Aliassime, Sebastian Korda and Aljaz Bedene but lost to Tsitsipas yet again.

Musetti caught the attention of the world at Roland Garros, where he reached the fourth round on his Grand Slam debut. The Italian defeated David Goffin, Yoshihito Nishioka and Marco Cecchinato to reach the fourth round and then took the first two sets against the World No. 1 Novak Djokovic, but could win just one of the next 17 games before retiring from the contest.

Currently at a career-high ranking of 58, Musetti took a break after the French Open for his studies. He’s never played a professional match on grass court, but reached the quarterfinals at the boys’ singles event at Wimbledon in 2018.

He will draw a lot of interest on his Wimbledon debut.

Hurkacz v Musetti Prediction and Tip

This will be one of the most keenly followed first-round matches at Wimbledon. Hurkacz’s form is a huge concern but his previous grass experience is a plus, and one doesn’t really know what to expect from Musetti on grass. The gritty Italian will fight for sure. It may need more than three sets to decide the winner.
