Gauff Lives Up to the Billing

Coco Gauff is widely touted to make a lot of noise in the women’s singles draw at the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

And in her first-round match on Court 2, Gauff was pushed hard by home-favorite Francesca Jones.

The teenage American was back at the scene where her career took off in 2019. She reached the fourth round of Wimbledon as a 15-year-old that season and her rise since then has been positively meteoric.

The match against Jones was a closely-contested affair. The British World No. 211 who was born with just three fingers and one thumb in each hand, has forged a reputation of proving her doubters wrong each time she plays the game.

Not many people saw Jones’ career on a tennis court bearing fruits, including the opinion of her doctors. But the Brit, who was making her dream debut at her home Slam gave a valiant effort.

Ultimately, it was Gauff who is three years her junior who was the more accomplished of the pair. Gauff garnered a break of serve in each set, which proved to be the decisive factor in the match.

Vesnina Makes Winning Return to Wimbledon

Elena Vesnina played in her first match at Wimbledon since losing in the second round of the 2017 edition to Victoria Azarenka in straight sets. And the Russian made sure of a winning return as she got the better of Italy’s Martina Trevisan, 7-5 6-1 in 87 minutes.

Vesnina fired seven aces, 23 winners  (almost twice her opponent’s), and won 22 out of 29 first-serve points to halt Trevisan’s bright start.

The Russian who is a former semifinalist (2016), also produced 19 unforced errors in the match, most of which played a part in her slow start. She was broken in the second game, but recovered shortly after, as the first set went down to the wire.

Eventually, it was the Italian World No. 98 who was unable to hold her side of the bargain as Vesnina conjured up three break points in game 11, and converted one of those to serve out the first set.

The second set was one-way traffic. Vesnina punished Trevisan’s weak groundstrokes which landed straight in her hitting zone and stormed to win the set 6-1.

Gauff v Vesnina Prediction and Tip

Vesnina is playing in just her fourth event of the season after returning from maternity leave. She has fared decently –  making the third round of the French Open, and now using her protected ranking to full effect at Wimbledon. But Gauff is a superior opposition and a significant level of competition.
