Thompson Dumps Out Nishikori

After seeing off Casper Ruud in a marathon four-hour first-round contest on Wednesday, Australia’s Jordan Thompson had to endure another three-hour-plus contest on Thursday as he knocked out former World No. 4 Kei Nishikori in the second round.

The Australian struck 39 winners and made 27 fewer unforced errors than Nishikori’s 49 to win the contest 7-5, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

Thompson, who had never won a match at Wimbledon in his previous four appearances, won his first on Wednesday, defeating Norway’s Ruud 7-6 (8-6), 7-6 (7-3), 2-6, 2-6, 6-2.

The 27-year-old Aussie had made 48 winners and 47 unforced errors and had won 157 points against Ruud. Thompson, who couldn’t save any of the three break points he faced against Nishikori, had saved 13 against Ruud.

Thompson is now 12-12 in 2021, and his best performances were quarterfinal finished at Melbourne-1 and Mallorca.

He is yet to win a title, but the Australian was a finalist at ‘s-Hertogenbosch, losing to Adrian Mannarino in the final.

Ivashka Continues to Impress on Main Draw Debut

Facing Thompson in the third round will be Belarus’ Ilya Ivashka, who knocked out France’s Jeremy Chardy in the second round on Thursday.

Having lost the first set on Thursday, Ivashka made a remarkable comeback to beat the Frenchman 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 in two hours and 24 minutes.

Ivashka served 18 aces and hit 38 winners, while making just 13 unforced errors to end Chardy’s 13th Wimbledon campaign.

The Belarusian has struck seven aces and 38 winners in his opening round win over Jaume Munar on Wednesday. The match that lasted two hours and 25 minutes saw Ivashka win 6-1, 7-5, 7-6 (7-5).

Ranked 79th in the world, Ivashka improved to 12-9 this season. He was a semifinalist in Munich, where he got his first top 10 win against Alexander Zverev in the last eight.

He has come to Wimbledon having played a host of matches on grass this season and that experience has paid off in the first two rounds. Ivashka was a quarterfinalist at Eastbourne, having won both his qualifying rounds and also the first two rounds, but couldn’t progress into the semifinals after going down to South Korea’s Soon-woo Kwon.

Thompson v Ivashka Prediction and Tip

There is little to choose between the World No. 78 Thompson and the World No. 79 Ivashka. But the Australian will have the upper hand in the contest, simply because of the quality of opponents he has defeated in the first two rounds. Expect Thompson to win, but Ivashka to at least take a set of him.
