Lorenzo Sonego v James Duckworth Head to Head
The two have never met previously.
Sonego Rallies to Beat Galan
Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego rallied from a set down to beat Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan in the second round of Wimbledon on Thursday.
The Italian served 18 aces and sent 37 winners across Galan to win the two-hour-and-47-minute contest 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 6-1. Sonego converted six of eight break points and saved three of seven to move into the third round at Wimbledon for the first time.
The 26-year-old had not won a match in his previous two appearances. However, he picked his first win at the All England Club on Wednesday, defeating Portugal’s Pedro Sousa 6-2, 7-5, 6-0 in an hour and 48 minutes.
Breaking Sousa’s serve seven times in the match, the World No. 27 struck 12 aces and 36 winners to advance.
Sonego, who won the Antalya title in 2019 and was a runner-up in Vienna in 2020, featured in two finals in 2021, winning the title in Cagliari by beating Laslo Djere and finishing runner-up in Eastbourne, falling to Alex de Minaur in the final.
Duckworth Into the Third Round for the First Time
James Duckworth moved into the third round of a major for the first time in his career, as the 29-year-old stunned the 2017 Wimbledon semifinalist and two-time quarterfinalist Sam Querrey in the second round on Thursday.
Making 44 winners to just 19 unforced errors, the World No. 91 won 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3, 6-2 in two hours and 20 minutes. Duckworth broke Querrey’s serve on five occasions while saving seven of eight break points that he faced against the American.
Duckworth had begun his Wimbledon challenge with a straightforward 6-4, 6-4, 6-1 win over Moldova’s Radu Albot on Wednesday.
This is Duckworth’s fifth main draw appearance at the Championships and he had won just one match before, in 2015. He came into the tournament with a 7-7 record in 2021.
Sonego v Duckworth Prediction and Tip
It’s going to be an interesting matchup between two players who had never been this far at Wimbledon. Sonego has delivered on grass before and is looking good on the surface this year. He has been in decent form throughout the year and will be the favourite to advance.
