Federer Into Another Wimbledon Second Week

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer’s Wimbledon campaign was off to a shaky start when he was down two sets to one in the opening round against Frenchman Adrian Mannarino on Center Court here at Wimbledon.

However, down 2-4 in the fourth set, the Frenchman slipped and pulled out with a twisted knee and the 20-time Wimbledon champion got lucky to move to the next round.

In the second round against Frenchman Richard Gasquet, Federer was off to an uncertain start, but upped his level after winning the first tie-break to win in straight sets comfortably and improve his head-to-head against the Frenchman to 19-2.

The challenge got more difficult as Federer played English favorite Cameron Norrie who has had a strong year with deep runs at many tournaments.

Federer was off to a good start taking the first set 6-4, and following with another break in the second for a 6-4 win. The Swiss missed his chances at 5-5 with two break points to serve out the match and then got broken to love at 5-6 feeling the scoreboard pressure and dropping the third set.

A tight fourth set followed and when Federer broke for 3-2, he got broken right back. Another opportunity to break showed up at 4-4 and this time the Swiss converted to serve and close out the match in four sets.

The 39-year-old is in the second week of Wimbledon again and will be hoping to make a deep run next week at the All England Club.

Sonego In Midst Of Good Season

Italian Lorenzo Sonego is playing in his third Wimbledon, but has never been past the first round before. However, he is a much improved player since his last visit here in 2019.

It has been a good year for the young Italian, buoyed by a good run on the clay, winning the title in Sardinia and making the semi-finals of the Rome Masters defeating Andrey Rublev and Dominic Thiem before losing out to Novak Djokovic.

He had a disappointing run at the French Open losing in the first round, but did well to make the Eastbourne finals, runner up to Alex de Minaur after an early loss the week before at Queen’s Club.

Sonego has made it to the round of 16 dropping only one set, but yet to be tested by serious opposition, as he has defeated Pedro Sousa, Daniel Galan and James Duckworth, none of whom have noteworthy grass credentials.

Having won his first title on the grass courts of Antalya in 2019, the no.23 seed will be looking to put up a strong performance to start the second week against Federer.

Federer v Sonego Prediction and Tip

Despite all the uncertainty and the questions around Federer’s fitness, age and form, he made to the round of 16 at the French Open, and is in the second week here as well. As the Swiss mentioned after the match, he felt like he is getting into his rhythm and that is a very positive sign going into the latter stages.

Sonego has had a good season and done well on the grass and has weapons that can trouble Federer with the big serve and powerful game. We can expect a tight four-setter with the eight-time champion prevailing.
