Jule Niemeier v Andrea Petkovic Head to Head

The two countrywomen met in the qualifying rounds of Strasbourg just prior to Roland Garros in their only meeting to date. Niemeier won 6-3 6-7 6-3.

Niemeier Stuns Zidansek

Jule Niemeier, arguably one of the finest talents in women’s tennis that Germany has produced in recent years, is on the cusp of something special on home soil.

Niemeier, who is a wild card entrant in Hamburg, has produced three terrific wins to reach her second WTA semifinal of the season. Following victories of Carolina Garcia and Tamara Korpatsch, the 21-year-old German stunned the French Open semifinalist Tamara Zidansek 6-2 6-4 in just 79 minutes.

The World No. 167 raced to take control of the match by breaking Zidansek twice in the opening three games. The Slovenian looked rusty and bereft of ideas as Niemeier’s power off the ground had shaken her from the getgo.

In the second stanza, there was a response from Zidansek who managed to recover from a break down to level at 3-3. But a break to love in the subsequent game completely obliterated the World No. 47 who went on to cede the set and the match.

Petkovic Rolls Back the Years

Andrea Petkovic had long been forgotten as a top-tier tennis player, but after years of toiling and grinding, it seems she is set for one glorious swansong. And how fitting, if it all happened on her home soil in Hamburg?

Petkovic will once again turn to her self-driven mindset and experience to win against the burgeoning talent of Jule Niemeier in the semifinal on Saturday. But irrespective of the result, the veteran has shown glimpses of her old self –  the form that propelled her to a career-high ranking of World No. 9 many years ago.

Petkovic authored the upset of the tournament when she knocked out the second seed Yulia Putintseva in three sets and went into her quarterfinal match against Ysaline Bonaventure odds-on favorite to roll into the last four. And she did it in style.

She fired five aces and won 65% of first-serve points. The fact that she also managed to break the Belgian at will helped her cause significantly (converted six out of eight breaks).

A place in the final beckons for the 33-year-old.

Niemeier v Petkovic Prediction and Tip

Two things that really stand out while watching Jule Niemeier are her hefty first serve and the easy power off the ground. If she continues to dominate behind those two pillars, there is a very good chance she will end Petkovic’s fairytale run.
