Rebecca Sramkova v Viktoria Kuzmova Head to Head

Both of their previous meetings have come at the ITF level with both players winning one match apiece.

Sramkova Completes Kvitova Shock

She had made it to the main draw of this competition on the back of successive qualifying wins but not too many would have expected Sramkova to do too much more than that. Especially not after she was drawn to play Petra Kvitova in her opener.

Sramkova had other ideas obviously.

Aided in part by Kvitova’s injury and some unusual nerves shown by her top seeded opponent, Sramkova completed a 7-6 (5), 3-6, 6-4 win in her first round match to move on. It was one of the upsets of the season when one looks at it purely from the point of difference in the rankings – Sramkova’s 226th to the world number 12 of Kvitova.

Twice in the first set, Kvitova had a chance to serve out for the set – at 5-4 and 6-5 – and she muffed up both chances. And even when it seemed she had found her way back into the match by winning the second set, Sramkova came back to kick-start a string of five successive breaks in the final set.

The fifth of these breaks was off Kvitova’s serve at 4-5 and propelled Sramkova into the second round – a huge result for her. Can she take the same momentum forward?

Kuzmova Scrapes Past Barthel

It took her an hour and 47 minutes but Kuzmova finally prevailed in her opening round match against Mona Barthel, coming back from a set down.

The Slovak won 2-6, 6-4, 6-3 to set up this second round meeting against Sramkova, which would have come as a huge relief for Kuzmova. She hadn’t won a main draw match since her second round victory at Monterrey in March this season.

After getting broken twice in a row in the first set, Kuzmova fell 1-4 behind in the second set and the writing looked to be on the wall. Much like Sramkova, however, she wasn’t done fighting as she first carved one break in the seventh and then another in the ninth to level the match.

And when she broke Barthel in the very first game of the third set, the match had well and truly turned around. Kuzmova faced just one break-point in the entire set, saved it and went on to clinch the match off her fourth break of the encounter.

Sramkova v Kuzmova Prediction and Tip

We are looking at two players coming off fighting wins but Kuznova, for her greater experience could hold the edge here despite Sramkova’s stunning win against the injured Kvitova.
