Marco Cecchinato v Federico Coria Head to Head

Cecchinato and Coria are tied at 1-1 in their head-to-head. The Argentine won the pair’s first meeting in at the Genoa Challenger in 2019 in three sets. But Cecchinato was victorious in their last outing – a qualifying match at the Paris Masters last year.

Cecchinato Outlasts Gasquet in Three Sets

Marco Cecchinato may not have played the Bastad Open before, but he is a natural clay-court machine. The 28-year-old Italian got the better of France’s Richard Gasquet in a battle of one-handers.  The man from Palermo won 6-2 5-7 6-3 in two hours and 26 minutes.

Cecchinato was making his debut appearance in Bastad, but his overall record on clay this season has been very impressive. With 18 wins to his name, including reaching the final on home soil in Parma, the 28-year-old is poised to make another trademark deep run this week.

And to prove his case, Cecchinato took the first set against Gasquet in domineering fashion. He broke the Frenchman’s serve twice, in opposite ends of the set. And he did so well in protecting his own serve, nullifying four opportunities that Gasquet created.

But Gasquet regained his composure and was more reactive despite falling down a break in the second set. Completely against the run of play, Cecchinato’s racket began to misfire and Gasquet recovered to take the second set.

In the third stanza, Cecchinato secured the lone break of the set, and had to save one on his own serve to progress past the 35-year-old former finalist.

Coria Beats Countryman Cerundolo

Federico Coria scored his 27th match win on clay in 2021, after edging past countryman Francisco Cerundolo 6-4 6-4 in a match that lasted three minutes shy of two hours.

Both Coria and Francisco Cerundolo are making waves in Argentinean men’s tennis. Francisco – the older brother to Juan Manuel Cerundolo – reached the final of the ATP tournament in Buenos Aires as a qualifier during the South American Golden Swing.

That result went a long way to push him to a career-high ranking of World No. 112.

But Cerundolo was a nervous wreck in the opening stages of the first-round clash against Coria. The experienced Coria raced to take a 3-0 lead in the first set. And despite surrendering one of the breaks back, he managed to eke out a crucial hold in the eighth game before sealing the set.

Cerundolo failed to apply any pressure in the second set, with Coria winning 78% of first serves and did not give away a single breakpoint chance.

Cecchinato v Coria Prediction and Tip

This should be a close one. Coria’s form on clay has yielded a second Challenger title in Prostejov, and was only prevented by in-form Gian Marco Moroni in the Milan Challenger final from completing back-to-back title wins last month. While Cecchinato has produced some stellar wins against top-tier opposition on the surface before Wimbledon. Expect this to go right to the wire.
