Emil Ruusuvouri v Norbert Gombos Head to Head

Ruusuvouri Needs a Turnaround in Fortunes

For Russuvouri, coming from Finland, a country not known for producing tennis players or hosting tennis tournaments, being in Bastad is as close to playing at home as he is going to get on the senior ATP Tour.

Last year, he reached his first ATP semi-final in Nur-Sultan, Kazakhstan, whilst, earlier this year, he caused a major upset at the Miami Open, by beating Alexander #Zverev, his first win over a top ten player.

He was though forced to come from behind in his first round match against Mikael Ymer, the higher ranked of the two Swedish brothers, the current world number 94.

Ymer dominated the first set, breaking Ruusuvouri in his two opening service games, and wrapping it up in less than half an hour.

The Finn though, regrouped, and, after saving three break points in his opening service game of the second set, achieved his own first break of serve in the next game.

Ymer got the break back, but serving stay in the match, dropped his own serve at just the wrong time from his point of view.

Again, Ymer had break opportunities in the third set, but could not take them and that proved costly when he was broken to love. Ruusuvouri served out next game.

Gombos Beats Previous Tournament Winner

The Slovak number one Gombos had his own difficulties in his opening round match with the Uruguayan, Pablo Cuevas, currently the 86th ranked player in the world, and a previous winner in Bastad.

He started badly dropping his opening two service games and the first set was beyond him after that.

And, when he dropped his serve in the ninth game of the second set, it looked like he was heading for an early exit from the tournament.

However, he rallied with a  break of his own next game, and it went toa tie-break. Both men struggled with serve, but Gombos held his at the vital time, and he was able to level the match.

The momentum had swung his way, and two early breaks in the third set consolidated his position.

From there he was just able to serve out.

Ruusuvouri v Gombos Prediction and Tip

Although Russuvouri is the higher ranked player, and both men had their struggles in the first round, Gombos has won their two previous matches, including their encounter on clay in Italy earlier this year.
