Zidansek Eyeing Maiden Senior Title

Although she has yet to win a senior tour event, Zidansek will believe she has an excellent chance to put that right in Lausanne, having already achieved a major career breakthrough by reaching the semi-final of the French Open.

She had never been beyond the second round of a Grand Slam before, but the form she showed during that run suggests there will be more such appearances to come.

The Slovenia was made to work hard though in her first round match, dropping the first set to Marina Melnikova of Russia, the world number 182, before rallying to win the next two.

However, she breezed through the firsts et on Thursday against Mandy Minella of Luxembourg, and the players had just started the second when the rain began to fall.

The hours the pair spent in the locker room seemed to affect the concentration of both women because, when they finally returned to court, both struggled to hold service, and six successive games were won by the receiver.

However, it was Zidansek who was finally able to hold and she made sure of the win by securing another break.

Bronzetti came through qualifying to earn her place in the first round, where she played the local woman Tess Sugnauz, a wildcard ranked 608th in the world.

It proved to be a very one-sided contest, with Bronzetti winning in straight sets in a little over an hour, dropping just one game in the process.

Her second round opponent was much tougher, though, in the form or the world number 82, and number 8 seed, Anna Blinkova of Russia.

But Bronzetti proved to be more than up for the challenge, as she achieved the best result of her career to date. She broke Blinkova in the opening game of the match, and two more breaks gave her the first set.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, but having saved one break point, Blinkova was broken again in her next service game, And Bronzetti underlined her dominance with one additional break.
