Paire Struggles Through to the Last Eight

Paire has certainly not made it easy for himself in Hamburg this week, struggling with his own demons as much as with his opponent.

That was certainly true of his first round match with Ricardas Berankis when he was constantly on the verge of losing his temper, although, I the end, he was spared having to test the limits of his own patience when, at six all in the first set, Berankis was forced to retire with an injury.

He then faced another qualifier in the form of the world number 130, Juan Pablo Varillas from Peru, but, if Paire thought that was going to be made any easier, he was forced to think again.

It was Paire who dropped his serve first and although he was soon level, he once more had to fight back from a  break down until he finally got his nose in front to take the first set.

The pair swapped breaks again early in the second set, and again later, but when nothing could separate them it went to a tie break which turned into an epic battle, dominated by serve.

Twice Paire had match point and twice the Peruvian denied him,, before earning a set point himself.

Paire levelled though and finally at the third attempt, converted a match point.

Delbonis Maintains His Hold Over Ramos-Vinolas

Delbonis has earned a reputation this year for being one of the most consistent performers on tour and is now in his third quarter-final in 2021 so far,

Having battled past the qualifier Zhizhan Zang in the first round, he faced a familiar foe on Thursday in the shape of Albert Ramos-Vinolas of Spain, a man he had played seven times before , and who he had a good record against.

The Argentine was on top in the first half, although in part that was due to the Spaniard struggling on serve, and making 15 unforced errors.

At the start of the second half though, Delbonis’ level started to drop. He won just one of the first 12 points and became tentative with hs shots.

However, he rallied to avoid going two breaks down and Ramos-Vinolas, who had lost hs previous six matches, began to falter,

It was soon back on serve and then Delbonis had four break points, Ramos-Vinolas saved then all and, next game, had three set points of his own,. He could not take any of them though and that meant a tie-break,

And when Delbonis was presented with a match point, he duly took it,
